Hello everyone, I am new to these forums. I registered mainly because I have a question about Alabama gun laws, but it is hard for me to clarify with local authorities because I am currently overseas in the Marine Corps. I will be going on leave to the US, and my place of residence is in Alabama. I want to bring a handgun to the range near where I live, but I currently do not have a license to carry. I read through the laws, but I am still a bit confused. IS there a way to store it in the vehicle that would allow me to transport it legally? Would transporting the handgun to the range count as transporting the gun to a place of business or something similar? I am trying to clarify so I do not risk any problems during my stay in the US. (By the way I was told by and officer that works in my county it would be easy for me to acquire a permit, but I will not be on vacation in AL long enough to be able to use it. I will apply anyways though :D) Thank you guys in advance for your help.

Yes in the trunk via FOPA,1986.

18 USC 926 - Sec. 926A. Interstate transportation of firearms
18 USC - U.S. Code - Title 18: Crimes and Criminal Procedure (January 2004)

Text:
Notwithstanding any other provision of any law or any rule or regulation of a State or any political subdivision thereof, any person who is not otherwise prohibited by this chapter from transporting, shipping, or receiving a firearm shall be entitled to transport a firearm for any lawful purpose from any place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm to any other place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm if, during such transportation the firearm is unloaded, and neither the firearm nor any ammunition being transported is readily accessible or is directly accessible from the passenger compartment of such transporting vehicle: Provided, That in the case of a vehicle without a compartment separate from the driver's compartment the firearm or ammunition shall be contained in a locked container other than the glove compartment or console.

I noticed that section is entitled interstate transportation of firearms, but I will only be transporting it about 5 miles from my house to the range. Also should I worry about "Notwithstanding any other provision of any law or any rule or regulation of a State or any political subdivision thereof" when the state law requires a permit to transport a handgun in a vehicle, but the exceptions are open to interpretation? I mean no disrespect, I am just trying to clarify so I can avoid trouble. Thank you for your prompt response.

Alabama gun transport

I live in Elmore county and am AD Air Force. You can get a CCL for about $25 for the year if you can prove residence. It takes about 5 seconds at teh the sheriffs office, no picture or lengthy background checks.

Unload, case, put it in the trunk and don't worry about it. Thanks for your service. If you get up to Huntsville beer is on me. Goes for you too lowdrag82. My son is in the USAF and stationed in Italy.

No problem, mfoster. The rules for Alabama residents who don't have a carry permit:
In vehicles, handguns must be unloaded and cased in the trunk or storage area.
Long guns may be carried in plain view or in gun cases.
As lowdrag suggested get that easy to get carry permit.
Roadkill,typing while you were posting.Can I get that beer too?Was once at Ft.Benning for 6 weeks.Is that close enough?:D

Thank you guys for your quick, informative responses. Now I just need to know if Elmore county AL requires you to be over 21 to apply for a permit, and a resident of the county or just the state? (I am 20 years old and am a resident of Shelby County).
