ALBANY, N.Y. -- A police officer was in critical condition on Christmas Eve after he was shot the night before during a foot chase with a robbery suspect, officials said.

Lt. John Finn, a 14-year veteran of the Albany police force, was wounded after he and another officer responded to a report of an armed robbery at a convenience store around 11:15 p.m. Tuesday, police said.

Keshon Everett, 26, shot Finn at least twice while being chased by police through the streets of Albany's South End neighborhood, Detective James Miller said. Officers returned fire and wounded Everett, he said.

Investigators said Everett apparently fired 12 shots from a 9mm semiautomatic weapon. One bullet struck Finn's bulletproof vest, but a second pierced his side, damaging internal organs, authorities said.

Finn underwent more than nine hours of emergency surgery at Albany Medical Center, said a hospital spokeswoman. He was in the intensive care unit Wednesday night. Everett was in critical condition after surgery.

The last time an Albany officer was shot in the line of duty was on Nov. 13, 1999 when Tracy Grady shot two officers trying to question him. Grady was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison in August 2001 for attempted first-degree murder for shooting officers Thomas Shea and Stanley Nadoraski. Both men recovered from their injuries.
