Well I do have another Remington seven that is in a synthetic stock :D

But it has not been hunted hard either.

Well, I will confess that I do have one Model Seven in a wood (laminate) stock that has not been hunted hard ... but it isn't a .308, so not fodder for this thread! :neener:

Well, unlimited budget and no specific application is going to create some oddball rifles and no consensus. If you're doing everything, there will be a compromise. Because for targets I'm going to want a long barrel, heavy rifle and large scope. But hunting I'm going to want a short barrel, light rifle and more modest scope. In terms of actions, I'm definitely going to want a CRF action - Kimber, Winchester, MRC, Dakota, commercial Mauser etc.

If I wanted to sit in the middle, here's what I'd build:
Modern Winchester or MRC M70 action
Timney trigger
Cerakote finish
16" Proof Research "sendero light" barrel, Thunderbeast brake-mount
Thunderbeast Ultra-5 suppressor
Manners MCH-EH4 stock, light fill, 2 front studs
Pacific Tool & Gauge bottom metal
Nightforce NSX compact 2.5-10x42 mil, zero stop, illumination
Home made Rhodesian sling attached to 2nd front and rear studs
(optional bipod)

Lots of money there, but about 8 lbs with acceptable good 800-1000y long range target capability, and good field capability which I care about much more.

My remington 660 is probably my favorite of the three deer rifles that I own. It has a shorter barrel than my others, has good balance and therefore comes up to he shoulder vey smoothly

^ WELL SAID!!!

I think a better thing to ask are "what options do you think are important for an all round .308"

Personally for an all round gun id probably chose a savage hog hunter or similar with the medium/heavy taper barrel, tho id prefer 22" to get a little extra velocity and move the blast a tad farther out...plus I like the way 22+ barrels look....ok that most of why.

Anyway, an ultralight/short .308 would be preferable for hunting, and it dosent give up much velocity in the shorter barrels, but the added weight will make the gun steadier and absorb more recoil. Also i find the slightly longer med weight guns swing smoother and make it easier for me to shoot quickly than a much lighter gun.
