All Purpose "mans rifle"

Dang, that scope sounds sweet. I didn't know there were variables that start at 2X and go to 10X.
It's a pretty fair scope for the money, on par with a Zeiss Conquest IMO...but, if you want one with a large adjustment range look to the Swarovski Z-6 series with it's generous 6x erector, or a Leupold Mk.-8 with a massive 8x erector, then start digging in the piggy-bank. I've decided that a 5x erector (or less) does just fine for anything I've found a need for.

:)

I have to say, when I hear "all purpose man's rifle", "Marlin 336 in 30-30 or 35 Rem" immediately comes to mind...

My opinion only, but every "man" owes it to himself to acquire a pre-safety 336 in 35rem. My favorite has a Weaver Classic 1-3x20 in Burris Signature rings. It's the only lever (of many I own) that is scoped. Marlin 30-30s for real-world-use deserve a Williams peep.

You'll thank me later.

I couldn't agree more about the pre safety 336 in .35 Rem. But I put a Lyman peep sight on mine.

I suppose that I might someday put a scope on my Remington 700 in .30-06. But for right now I can shoot almost as accurately with a good receiver mounted peep sight out to 200 yards, and I like the way a rifle handles without a scope. Much faster for snap shots too.

I totally agree with the peep sights on lever actions, but PLEASE... don't have the lyman vs. williams argument in front of the scopers. :p
makes us look bad. united front, and all that.

Why does every man need a Marlin? The sexism here really sets me off. :fire:

What would be a good bolt gun for everything,to hunt with, shoot a bunch at the range, and be able to run away from zombies as well of course.

- Must be a decent manly calibre, .308 probably or 30-06.
- Cant have a thin sporter barrel
- Also cant be a super heavy bench rest gun (needs to be decently portable)
- Needs to be scoped, variable scope with a low to high range. 2-9x

Im thinking of something akin to the WW2 bolt actions but Id be interested to hear opinions!
My first choice would be a pre-64 Model 70 Winchester. Mine was made in '39, has a peep sight snuggled behind the rear scope mount and currently wears a K4 Weaver scope.

My second choice would be the M1903A3 -- a Springfield with a peep sight. I have one made by Remington and one by Smith-Corona.

Coincidentally, years ago someone asked what rifle you would choose if you were going into the Rocky Mountains with the old Mountain Men -- and those three rifles were my answer.

Although I was tempted to choose my M1 Garand instead.;)

What's with the "man's rifle" crap? Rifles don't make you a man, big caliber rifles don't make you more manly...in fact, manliness (whatever the heck that really is) is a question of self-awareness. I've been a man for 66 years, a shooter for 58 of them and have a few rifles, purpose-selected as tools to accomplish specific tasks (like target shooting <300 yards, target shooting > 300 yards, varmint hunting, CPX2 hunting, CPX3 hunting and, though not yet, CPX4 hunting). Since Zombies don't exist, I don't have any Zombie rifles, and, since I don't figure to hold off a battalion of anything, I don't have a battalion-holding-off rifle either.

As to your sex fantasies about being a man, try to think on what you're asking and try again.

Harry, disgustedly
Tell that to the face eater that took several rounds before expiring down in Miami. Living dead or not, scary stuff.
