ALmost a self defence situation

We all know your brother made a stupid decision, but I can't think of any good ways to make your situation "better." Packing heat would be a +1 to your situation. Maybe sitting in the back seat so you can have a better chance of disarming him if he becomes hostile. Not many good options. Since I can't CCW yet, I decided to wedge a CETME bayonet between the seat and console to aid in a car jacking scenario, etc. It is not much, but better than nothing. It may help scare off some lightly armed punks if they try to screw around. Small white people seem to make good targets for thugs these days.

If I fell into this trap, I would have shot my brother first and then the BG. Ok, maybe not, but I think the only thing you could and should have done was step out of the vehicle to at least create a reason for your brother to tell this guy to piss off. The ensuing argument would have made Mr. Hitchhike uncomfortable and maybe persuaded him to move onto an easier target (like most BG's do). Now, in this case, if he drew on you and you were both outside of the car you at least had the ability to move on your side. In the end, though, that had to be one of the dumbest things I have heard someone do to THEMSELVES in quite some time so you might want to slap your brother around or he is going to keep setting himself up as an incredibly easy target for violent crime. And no, if this is his level of situational awareness/intelligence, should you try to persuade him to start carrying.

Never let someone in your car that you don't know. Especially the way you described him! Kids know not to talk to strangers but your brother seems to need a lesson about reality today. Hope this was a lesson for you to not leave your CCW gun at home. Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

The second he "joked" about killing you I would of told your brother to pull over and kick that @%^&^# out of the car.

I was thinking about this again, I thought of another option of something that you could have done.

Now this is only if he didnt have his gun drawn already. But you could roll the windows down in the rear where he is sitting (if you have power windows). Then drive arround a bit and unlock your doors. After driving a little more and picking a good spot, jump out the car, draw your weapon and point it at him (clear shot through the window). Then command him to leave the vehicle and leave him on the curb. If done quickly, this may take him by suprise and should only take at most 1-1.5 seconds. Your brother, unfortunately would be left in the car unless he was smart and quick enough to jump out also.

But that might be one way to handle it if you had your ccw on you. But if he already has his weapon drawn, I wouldnt recommend this.

Out here where I live its a pretty long ways walking to get anywhere. That said I have stopped and giving rides to people I don't know.

I know one of these days it could end up costing me, but you have to keep a little faith in your fellow man. Oh and the .38 that is out of sight but within 8 inches reach of my left hand makes it a little easier.

I am not above giving someone a ride provided, my wife or kids are not in the car I don't get a bad feel and I am armed.
In this I'd have opted to tell my brother he is an idiot get out of the car and walk. FYI a 2 ton caliber automatic beats a 230 grain bullet
