and she's a sweetheart...this is an MK9. Man I like it a lot, and I haven't even shot it yet. Put some Militec-1 on the slide rails, and racked it a few hundred times. Also got a smartcarry pouch on the same day, for a nice combo for casual wear CCW - this is a good setup - you cannot detect any printing at all with my loose-ish jeans on. There's very little not to like about this gun - it was $399 plus tax brand new - this seemed like a good deal, but is that about the goin' rate for these? I sure couldn't understand why the PM9 in the case next to it was exactly $200 more ($599) for a less durable gun. I guess that might matter for pocket or ankle carry (the weight), but in this smart carry, or with belt/holster carry, the MK9 is plenty light enough. Me happy. :neener:

Ahhh, I see - look at this MSRP page:

http://www.kahr.com/pistols_9mm.html

The 9093-BOX, which is what I got, is shown at $475 MSRP, some $244 less than the MK9 all stainless. So $399 wasn't that great. Still, nice gun. I'm wondering if there's any special finish on this blueing - kinda doubt it, or it would be advertised - Kahr page just says "matte black finish" - this is one of the newer "poor man's Kahrs" I guess. Works for me.

Congrats on your first Kahr. $399+tax is a great price. Be sure and give us a range report.

be sure to shoot the break in

I bought two. One worked great, one had a major problem. Same model as yours. Kahr fixed the problem and I have shot both through break in. I carry one every day in a bladetech IWB. Good purchase and a great product.

This is the exact set up I have, Kahr MK9 with smarty carry. This is what I like for business dress when I am not carrying a 1911.

I like the MK9 _much_ better than the PM9. I had both but sold the PM9 to a friend. The MK9 has a much better trigger and is much nicer to shoot. I think the size is more important than the weight so I really like the MK9. I think if more people had the opportunity to try both they would go with the MK9 more often than not.

Congrats on a great choice.

Good for you, GunGoBoom. I carry a PK-40 Covert in a Kytac holster in my front pocket when it's too hot to cover up with a jacket. Mine has absolutely the BEST out-of-the-box trigger I've ever felt; buttery ssmmoooooootthh.

Sam

Thanks guys. Baker, what was your major problem with the one? I'll give range report when fired. Oh, also, I took some very sharp edges/corners off of two places on the pistol with light dremeling. One is the left upper rear of the backstrap, where it curves backward before going straight up to the rear of the slide; man was that sharp - both sides, really, but the left side dug into the meat of my hand. The other was the very tip of the trigger - if you could take that stock trigger off, you could use it for an awl, I think. And FWIW, my primary carry, non-casual (with covering garment) is a CZ PCR pistol, but this Kahr is so neat, that I can see possibly employing this in 3 different carry modes: smartcarry, pocket holster carry, and regular belt holster carry, with the reason for the last of those being, rather than the PCR, that the gun is so small that one can wear it OWB with an untucked t-shirt or sweatshirt, and said shirt will go down far enough to cover the bbl completely. (IWB is out of the question for me, as I hate that uncomfortable nonsense, so this is an important issue for casual wear, in the event that the smartcarry is not ideal for some reason). Oh yeah, that trigger IS smooth, ain't it? :)

Oh, what aftermarket stuff do you recommend? I'm kind of liking the idea of a steel guide rod (what is the stock one made of? - can't tell if that is all aluminum or some alum and some plastic), and some wrap-around-the-frontstrap rubbery grips for it. Plus that one shoot-through wallet holster that somehow evades being an AOW. And of course, I want another version of my favorite holster for this, the Milt Sparks Mirage (yaqui slide style).

Scott, my buddy bought a PM9 after shooting an MK9, so he thought he'd like it, but the recoil was so unmanageable that he quickly dumped the PM9. Again, the weight could be more important than controllability for pocket or ankle modes of carry, esp. pocket. But the weight is less important for smartcarry, belt holster carry (IWB, OWB, crossdraw, etc.), or a quallity belly band like the neoprene ABHC Sport holster, which is sturdy; hence the MK9 or 40 is the better choice for those modes seems to me.

Oh, another thing I noticed about this Kahr (all Kahrs?) is that you can forget about dropping the slide with the slide stop lever - that thing is only for manually employing to hold open the slide looks like. Took two thumbs and a lot of elbow grease. This is a slingshot-method-only gun, as a practical matter. Which is fine, so long as you practice for it, if you practice mag changes for a small gun like this, that is.

GGB

The slide is hard to drop on an empty mag, but I have no problem dropping the slide while chambering a round.

Your gun is new and tight. Give it time - I am sure it will break in for you.

Full range report, please. I admire your self restraint. Whenever I buy a new gun, I take it straight to the range. Last week I bought a Glock 26, and by the time I'd gone to bed that night I'd run 400 rounds through the gun. I blew two weeks of ammo budget and ended up borrowing from my coffee fund, but I have no regrets.

GGB, GOOD choice, GOOD price, good holster. I have the same setup and love it! Carry it a bunch cause it is SO EASY to hide in a lot of different ways.

Mine is very accurate for what it is and is 100% reliable from round #1. Never needed a 'break in' but it got one just for fun. You WILL enjoy that lil hunk of gun!

I had one of the VERY early PM9's and it had a couple of initial teething pains but once Kahr fixed it, it ran perfect and was almost as accurate as my Wilson at closer ranges. I sold it for a newer all black PM40 with night sights and it has been VERY reliable throughout the break-in period with ZERO problems in FTF or FTE. I did have a couple FTF when I tried the Pearce grip extenders on the 5 round mag. They look and feel great, but at least one round per magazine it would pop the magazine out on the recoil from the previous round, and the slide wouldn't pick up the next round, since the magazine dropped below it's level. You just got a nice "CLICK" after you pulled the trigger on round number 2-4 and the mag would be just SLIGHTLY disengaged and hanging down from the magwell. It ran great in all stock form and all of my 6 round mags were flawless in operation.I put the stock floorplate back on the 5 round mag and it never missed a single round. I tried both of the units in the package with the same results both time. Needless to say I went back to the stock metal floorplate.... especially for a "carry gun". It works GREAT with the stock magazines but NOT with the Pearce extensions. It's really too bad as I REALLY liked the way they gave my pinkie a little more support on such a jumpy pistol,a and a little more conceable over the too long 6 round mag.

After I read that I thought, oh yeah, what the hell am I thinking, and went to the range day before yesterday with it - shot 250 rounds or so. Man oh man, she's a shooter. I couldn't make it hiccup - tried shooting sideways limpwristing, upside down limpwristing, younameit, just kept right on going. It's quite accurate as well - surprisingly so for a gun of that size. Recoil quite manageable. Did a number of rapid fire strings with no problems. The point of impact was off - it's hitting low about 1.5" at 7 yards, and left about 2 to 2.5" at 7 yards - the left can be fixed by drifting the rear. The low - hmm, I'll have to think about whether that matters enough to get a different front sight, after trying some other ammo brands. I was shooting Speer Gold dot 115s and *gasp* Wolf ammo 115s. :uhoh: All in all, very very pleased. Now, where's the best price on extra factory mags? Thanks for the input.

P.S. Learned a couple things about smartcarry too. You have to do a little maneuvering to clear a shootin lane when doing your standing-up business, but you can leave it as is when doing your sitting-down business.

P.P.S. Now I hear the matte black finish on Kahrs are super rust magnets - one guy says he had to turtle wax his, and that lasted maybe 3-4 days before rust appeared. Confirm or contradict? Send off slide for an NP3 finish or some such maybe?

I'd wait and see. The earliest black finish Kahrs are carbon steel and will rust if carried and not wiped down periodically. The newer black finish ones are stainless and should be as rust-resistant as any other stainless pistol. If you just bought it new it's almost certainly stainless with a black finish.

I could of course be wrong DR and intend no offense, but if he paid $399 for the Kahr it's probably a BOX model and they do use carbon steel slides.

Check the model number on thecase and if it ends in BX or BOX it's carbon steel which is indeed a bit of a bugger to keep from rusting - a light application of RIG oil or similar frequently reapplied would be best I think - especially if exposed to elements/sweat or stored for a long time.

If it isn't a BOX model (check Kahr's website btw for differences) then you got a hell of a deal.
