Should it be a .22?

I really don't want to spend more than about $300... but want something fun to shoot and accurate... while also being somewhat portable (I don't like those "long" pistols." I will shoot with regular sights... not intended for competition except among friends and friendly wagers...

I just realized how much money I was spending on ammo at the range... and think a .22 will cut way down on that cost...

So I need your help... I really don't know a heck of a lot about the plinkers... Need your suggestions..

So I take it the Ruger MkII and the Browning Buckmark count as "long pistols"?

Those are the standout choices, but I take it you're looking for something Walther PPKish?

I was idly looking for the same thing a month or so back, and the best buy seemed to be any of the Bersa .22LR pistols. Lots of folks on THR love the .380 Bersa, so presumably the .22 might be good too. Maybe run a THR search on the subject? On GunBroker and AuctionArms, you occasionally get the older single-action Bersas for about $100, the newer ones are DA/SA, but not sure where to buy the newer ones. I believe the new ones go by the name "Firestorm". Looks kinda like the Walther TPH, but much more affordable.

If you want a full-sized "combat" pistol in .22LR, check out the CZ Kadet, though that may be just out of your pricerange.

The cz Kadet gets good reviews around here. I know I'm tempted. The advantage that it has is size and weight, heft. Feels like your working with your full size pistol. I have barrel weights on my Hi-Standard Supermatic...22 so that helps, but it's a long barrel. Short barrel you might look into a used Hi-Standard, Sport King, Flight King or Duramatic.

This is HS Flight King .22 probably made in 50's. Found it on Guns America...$250. The most desirable High Standards are the older ones, made in Ct.. Very accurate, fun to shoot. Be careful these pistols can be an addiction.

Ruger MK II or MK III, or the 22/45. I just picked up a MK II 22/45 (the previous generation to the current one) and love it.

Nice! I have a Sport King from the early 60's with both a short and long barrel. Fantastic little thing. If you do find one buy it, they are awesome little things.

I am not up to speed on the newer Mk III Rugers, but cut my teeth on a Standard about 45 years ago. I have also given these guns to various lady shooters in the family and they are very happy with them.

My choice of the litter is the standard blued steel, fixed sighted pistols with 4 3/4" barrels. The triggers can range from so-so to quite good. I have installed the Volquartsen drop-in sear-hammer set and steel trigger with excellent results.

The one I use most is a rehabilitated beater--but it outshoots everything else I own.

my favorite...

im addicted to the ruger MK II 22/45's, love 'em. you wont find a better plinker for the money. if youre looking for a good, steady pistol without too long a barrel, get a MK II in either the regular grip style or the 22/45 grip in the 512 model, thats the Bull Barrel thats 5 1/2" long. here's my collection:

i shoot CCI mini-mag HP's outta mine, they work great.

If you cant find any MK II, i guess the MK III will work, i just am not real happy with all the "lawyer" updates for it. good luck! -Eric

plinker

recently picked up a Sig Mosquito "for the Mrs."

Fun! (but moderately accurate)

A little aggrevating trying to figure out what ammo it liked, but once I found what it would digest, good times ensued!

Plus I can fit the X2L laser/light combo on its tac-rail to give the little woman that added security while I am away :D

Exactly what do you mean by a "long pistol"? If we know that then you can get some useful answers.
