Altamont Grips

anyone ever try them? they have a good price on the bonded ivory jobs that I think would really good on a polished 629 Mtn gun.

I haven't tried any of the bonded ivory grips but I have a couple sets of Altamont wood grips on revolvers and they're very well made. Fit and finish is excellent.

Altamont is one of the best aftermarket hangun stock maker's, and that's the problem. They are frequently tied up with large orders from the major handgun makers who pick Altamont to make the grips for their custom or special-issue guns. They pay particular attention to the inletting, although they can't get a perfect fit unless the gun's frame is submitted and the stocks fitted individually to it. It has been my experience that they come closer then most in this regard however. I am sure you would be pleased with any style of Altamont grip you might choose to put on your revolver.

I have had and have several pairs of altamont grips for the following:
S&W 41, 1911, Ruger Mk II. All have been excellent in fit and finish and quality of materials. All have been wood. I do have a set of 1911 grips with the faux ivory insert that is ingraved and that work also is top notch.

These are Altamont grips on my S&W model 60-1. These were originally for a special run of S&W's for Talo Distributors (the gun pictured is not one of those.)

I got the grips from a guy that had one of the Talo guns. He changed the grips and sold me these. Both he and I eventually contacted Altamont to inquire about buying some more.

The person I spoke was not very polite as they said, "...we will not sell grips to anyone that were made for special order guns." It was not the words, but the tone.

Wierd, I had their site saved to my favorites but it's not working anymore.

I don't think they kept up their website because they decided they were no longer interested in making individual sales. They are well enough known within the industry to be able to forego advertising.

On the other hand they're products are impeccable, which is the reason they enjoy such strong industry support. Perhaps a FAX or telephone call (see post #7) requesting the names of some distributors or dealers might bring a response.

Alive and well

Altamont, now known as Handgungrips.com, makes excellent grips at reasonable prices. I have bought 2 pairs of grips from them online in the last month. The website is below, and a picture of my S&W model 36 wearing walnut laminate boot grips from Altamont.

Old Fluff is probably right. Altamont is running a 1000 stocks in French walnut for Talo's Ruger 10/22 Classic III, and may have run the Classic II stocks. Phone # & Fax are correct.....ask for Denise.
