Okay, so my wife to be is quite a bit shorter than me and I think it would be very helpful to her if the stock on my 1100 was a bit shorter. I am thinking of just cutting it down. Is this a workable solution? Or do I just need to by another stock?

It can be done, and some have done it successfuly. However if you remove it and take off the butt pad you will find the screws for the butt pad only go a short distance, and the sling mount is not that far forward of where they end.
The stock also slowly tapers and the butt pad will be oversized and stick out beyond the stock once shortened.

If you cut it down the screws attaching the butt pad will screw into even less plastic, with less threads securing the butt pad.

I am assuming this is a synthetic stock.

A wood stock pretty much allows you to do whatever you want, sand it even, and then redo the finish for an excellent finished product. The synthetic stocks however have little extra plastic to spare, and that is a problem because you have to screw the butt pad in someplace.

It's actually wood. I had heard rumors about it being hard to do and hadn't considered that that might have to do with synthetic stocks...

hi patrick,,, if you cut the wood off to much you will need a smaller scale recoil pad,,or one with the holes closer together,,,,i run into this when i set up a rifle or shotgun for my wife,,,,,i have found that the choate stocks work really well for her with all the spacers out,,,,,,makes the length of pull around 12 3/4 - 13 it's a little short for me but i can shoot a short stock better than she can shoot a long stock,,,,,,any way,, i just changed everything over to synthetic stock and forearm and saved the wood,,,,once you cut it,,,,,,it is cut,,,,,,,on her rifles i restock them too and save the original,,,,i really have to cut her stuff down and it would wreck the resale if i ever need to or want to sell,,,,,,,cheaper in the long run for me,,,and i like messin with the stuff for her,,,,,and me

Getting a new synthetic youth stock might be the easiest thing to do cheaply.
The 12" LOP Hogue overmolded might be worth considering as well (the one designed for use with body armor on.)

However not all recoil pads are the same. Some have hollow cells in them, so cutting or sanding them is bad. Solid rubber however can be sanded to whatever shape you desire. So the type of butt pad matters as well.

I was actually planning on putting on a slip on pad for added comfort for her anyways. In which case how much will it matter if I can't get the original butt pad back on?

A good butt pad makes a huge difference in felt recoil. Not so much in the actual recoil, but in the hurt it puts on the shoulder, I would be careful with using a pad designed for convenience rather than effectiveness.
Especialy for a woman that may not be that into (?) shooting or punishment. Practice makes perfect, so you want something comfortable to practice with.

Thanks. I will try and make sure that I can get the original pad back on, this may mean I simply don't cut it down as much...

Is she shorter in "Height" or shorter in "Reach" or "Both" Take her and the gun to a good reputable gunsmith and have him fit her properly and install a high quality pad. My local shop does this for $80 with a "Decelerator" pad. It'll be money well spent.

Lots of women I know end up shooting "youth models" its worth a look to see if she fits a youth... if thats the case, just buy a youth stock.

Well she is enough shorter than me that it needs to be brought in at least a little bit. She actually didn't notice it being to short for her, but I noticed that it was a little long for her to hold it as tight to her shoulder as is necessary to avoid a real bruisin with a twelve gauge. I think I maybe should just have her fitted...
