Am I a Criminal, an Anarchist, a Right Wing Nut or just a guy going to the range?

I was driving to the range on Saturday and it occurred to me that an alignment of circumstances had transpired that could have spelled major trouble.

Consider the following Real scenario and the potential interpretations:

Background

I went to the range last week on Thursday. In my car cabin were my carry gun (in the console between the seats), and a bag of targets. In my trunk was a shotgun, a scoped Marlin 60 22 LR, a cased 9mm, my 1911 45 ACP cased, and a range bag with a 22 target pistol. Also in the trunk were 100 rounds of 12 gauge shotgun shells, a box of 550 rounds plus 2 boxes of 50 of 22 LR, 150 rounds of 9mm and 150 rounds 45 ACP.

My time ran out at the range because there was a waiting line and I decided to leave rather than wait for another open slot. Since I concentrated on getting my scope zeroed in I had 100 rounds each of the 9mm and 45 ACP left along with the shot shells and the 550 rounds of 22 LR.

Since I planned on returning on Saturday to finish my session, I left everything in the car as it was.

I was lucky to find both 9mm and 45 ACP in stock at my local Wally World on Sat morning and bought an additional 300 rounds each. The ammo was put on the floor in the car cabin.

Scenario 1

I am stopped by a local LEO for not stopping at a stop sign. I would have my hands on the wheel and tell him I have a loaded fire arm in my car and where (console). What does the LEO observe? The locals here just ask if you have a CCW, which you don’t need to have to carry a gun in your vehicle, but I have. Because I had a CCW he might just move on and if I didn’t he would most likely want me to put the gun where he could see it. He then would decide to either ticket me or not…event over.

Scenario 2

I get in a minor car accident because someone hit me from behind. The accident causes my trunk to open. The other guy observes the guns and ammo in the trunk and freaks out on the LEO when he comes despite my complete cooperation and totally non threatening demeanor. What does the LEO observe now? Everything is legal but what happens?

Scenario 3

Same as in Scenario 2 but a St Louis Dispatch reporter (totally liberal paper) happens by and begins snooping and listening. What does he observe? What does the LEO do now? The reporter observes ….4 guns he can see and 1450 rounds of ammo…so we think.

Next day an article runs “Local resident in minor accident has arsenal of guns in his vehicle and armed with 1450 rounds of ammo. Police are not commenting about the incident at this point but a far right wing magazine (NRA’s monthly publication) was also found. The dept of homeland security has warned……”

Again, nothing illegal here. But people observe what they want and it could affect you. Would the LEO believe I was going to the range? Could I be cast as a criminal or anarchist or some right wing nut? What if I had a newspaper cut out about Russ Carnahan’s (Dem- US Congress) upcoming Town Hall Meeting I was planning on attending the following week in the car too?

Should I have to remove my weapons from the car for 1 day or “sanitize” my ammo down to what I might actually use?

Could this be a recipie for disaster?

Your comments, observations, and recommendations are welcome.

I think you're just being paranoid. No one is going to panic from seeing a cased weapon (they probably don't know what it is anyway) or boxes of ammo, in my opinon.

Wow. Lighten up a hair. In none of the incidents you've described have you in any way violated any laws or given a law enforcement officer any reason to give you trouble. As far as I know according to your jurisdiction's laws, you're opperating above and beyond legal question. No different than if you'd had a week's worth of groceries in the car.

In none of those scenarios has anything happened that was even notworthy, let alone something to "notify homeland security" over. A cop who hasn't seen a civilian with a couple of bricks of .22s and a few boxes of 9mm really needs to get out more.

If you read some of the other threads on here, there's folks regularly now showing up at presidential speaking engagements with loaded rifles and sidearms -- exercising their rights to the bleeding edge as it were.

And so far, they're all free to go on about their business without overt (at least) further hassle. Somehow, I don't think these fender-bender scenarios you've posited are going to get you 15 seconds of fame.

IMHO.

Quick, get rid of the evidence. Sell it to me:D
Seriously, I can understand where he is coming from. There would be his name in the paper. It would not lead to any legal action, but I can see his picture and address being put up by anti-gunners all over his neighborhood .

Something like this:

DO YOU WANT <HIS NAME>
AND HIS ARSENAL OF DEATH
LIVING WHERE HE CAN GET AT

<picture>
<adddress>

YOUR CHILDREN?

JOIN THE VIGIL FOR SAFE NEIGHBORHOODS

TONIGHT AND EVERY NIGHT
IN FRONT OF THE
DEATH MONGER'S HOUSE

For everyone telling him he's overthinking things this

Has happened to me. Minor fender bender, but I had an uncased rifle in the back seat. Other driver saw it, freaked out and called police saying he was in an accident with a man with a gun, cars show up, lights flashing, I'm totally clueless. I thought he just called in for a police report

Other driver runs up to responding officer #1, tells them I have a gun, cop walks up pretty apprehensively, asks to see my hands, asks if I'm armed. I explain I'm unarmed but have a rifle in my truck which is plainly observable. I cooperate, a few tense moments go by, but once the LEO realized I was just a guy with a rifle that happened to have been hit by the other guy he lets me go with a, "You didn't do anything against the law, but buy a gun case."

Depending on where this happened things could have gone much worse. This actually happened in St. Louis County, but had I been in St. Louis City I guarantee I would have been in the matching bracelts in the backseat of a patrol car for at least a couple of hours.

Wow. Holy out-ta-get-me, Batman!

Has this happened... ever? Is there really some reason to be concerned? Or are we just stroking each other's paranoia fetish for the thrill of raising goosebumps?

Every time there's one of these "ARSENAL FOUND..." headlines, if you read the story you'll see that the "ARSENAL" wasn't the issue so much as the fact that the police were busting the guy for running narcotics, or occasionally because they've been tipped off to a stash of unregistered machine guns or explosives.

Seriously, the media going on full alert because someone is exercising their rights in a very common, perfectly legal way, is just a non-starter. No one's going to picket your house because you own guns. Back in 2005, a Gallup poll indicated that 40% of all US households own guns.

It would sound like an Onion headline, "Man Admits to Being Just Like 4 Out of 10 of His Neighbors!"

Film at 11:00...

Could this be a recipie for disaster?

Yes, and so could almost anything else we do..........if we think about it in just the right (or wrong) way.

Always have your receipt where you bought the ammo until you get home. Act normally and dont show anxiety. You have done nothing wrong and assert your God given right which is to speak freely . Again, do not be afraid you done nothing wrong.

Chill out man. People carry guns and ammo in their cars all the time. I almost always have something kicking around in my car; at least 100 rounds of ammo. When I go to the range, it is not uncommon for me to have a few thousand rounds of ammo in the car with a few guns. If something happens, I am licensed and have every right to lawfully carry and transport my firearms for whatever reason. They can't arrest you for having a licensed firearm, barring any illegal activities you may have done, ie: murder someone.

I only have one question regarding all the scenarios as a whole...

That's all you were taking to the range? I've made trips to the range that would've come close to doubleing you load of guns. And regarding ammo, I've more than doubled that load, and not had a .22lr in the bunch.

Don't worry about it. You were breaking no laws.
