am I the only one that just loves the 22 magnum and 17hmr?

I just seem to love both of these for things like squirrels and such. Birds too. I spend most of my time on paper. Is there some reason neither is offered in a Ruger 10/22 platform? I have 2 17's and 2 of the 22 magnums, one each is the thumbhole stock.... I just figured a semi auto would be fun too.

I like the 22. I have no use for the 17. A little searching and you will find that Ruger tried the 10/22 in the magnum, but it didn't work out. I had two of them; one was accurate and one was reliable.

I have a CZ (Brno) 611 that is very accurate and reliable. The H&K 22 mag is very nice but pricey. IIRC, Volquarson makes a semi, too.

I started shooting 22 mag over 40 years ago and the round performed well on crows, and small game. Mossberg 640K chuckster was well named and the round worked on larger pests like coon and chucks where regular 22 LR was not nearly as effective.

Now I have a 17HMR but no longer hunt so I can not attest to its performance other than on paper which is not bad. The 17HMR was chambered in semi auto guns by Remington but did not work out well. The Ruger 10/22 was chambered for 22 magnum - not sure if that was a problem or just a slow seller. H&R also made a 22 mag auto gun.

They are nitch calibers and are still very popular among many folks today.

Keep your eyes open, there was a 10-22 magnum built in the not too distant past IIRC it was introduced in 1999. Google for Ruger 10-22 magnum and I bet you find some stuff.:) You can even get parts for it at Midway and Brownells to name a few places.

If you're interested in a semi auto magnum rimfire Remington still manufactures the 597 in 22 mag. Pretty slick IMO. I've read a bit over at rimfirecentral.com and other forums in regard to the 597 chambered for 22 mag and they seem to be fairly realiable and capable of decent accuracy. I'd still opt for a bolt gun of some sort ( like a Savage 93 or CZ 455), however that is mostly personal preference.

.22 mag/.17 hmr

I don't have a .17,but do have a few .22mags.The .17 is to be embraced due to all the choices in ammo for .22mag we have now.My favorite rifle is the ruger 77 w/mod 70 style safety, with a 2-7 burris compact;looks like it belongs togather.Gets mostly 40gr sp.

I have both in a Ruger 77/22 MKII all weather target, with boyds thumbhole stock, and v-bolt configuration. Remarkably accurate rifles capable of 1.15" groups out at 100yds. Both sport Buschnell 4-9x50 scopes I bought on a buy one get one free clearance. They often get them in at Buds Guns. com

Love the .22 mag, I have a NAA MINI, and I love it!! It's my hiking snake gun, it's great, I'm looking for a rifle chambered in it

I have two .22 magnums and like them, a Marlin bolt action rifle and a AMT Automag ll (bought back in 1987) both are SS.

I dont own either.

But My 10/22 is from 1971 and I have a 22/45 and a SAA, I shoot a lot of 22.

Then again Im old and set in my ways, enjoy what you like, when people pay your bills they can have a say. :)

You are just rather lonely on THR. Rimfirecentral is the place to hang out and discus the various Rimfires.

I have a Westernfield 822; AKA Mossberg Chuckster, and I love it. I did some restoration work on it, slapped on the fantastic S330 peepsights, and she should be a heck of a shooter (I did a bit more work on it but haven't had a chance to test it out this year).

The Ruger 10/22 was made only briefly, and experienced some issues; I believe with bolts cracking. Semi-auto 17HMR and 22WMR are hard to build; they are almost too much for actions like the 10/22, but they aren't enough for the rifle to be gas operated or anything like that. At least that is the way I have heard it explained.

I've had one kind or another of .22 WMR for 50 years. The first one was a Model 24 .22WMR/.410. I only have one .17 HMR...

It's a S&W 647.

I use my Rem 597M (22WMR) quite a bit,

I've had one 22 mag. or another around for more than 40 years...

Ruger made some 10/22 mags., but they had so many problems Ruger took them off the market. They even tried to buy back the one my brother had!

Ohhhh baby, the 640 "Chuckster" .... many a NY Finger Lakes region 'chuck met their maker at the end of mine some 30 years ago. 22lr wasn't -quite- enough to do most of them in, but 22Mag made 'em DRT (Dead Right There!) every time.
In SD work, 22Mag is a particularly nasty little round that never quite gets it's due. Even out of a 1.5" barrel a Winchester solid point will deliver well over 12" of penetration in ballistic gel.

I think they are fun 'training rounds' as something between a 22 lr and a centerfire. Also, there are several places I've gone prarie dog hunting where all the landowner will allow us to use is rimfires. The 22 mag and 17 definitely have more range and shoot flatter than the 22lr.

I don't have a 17, but I agree

.

I really like the 22 magnum in both a rifle and pistol. I agree that the 22 magnum is a great transition from rimfire to centerfire.
