I like wood and blued steel but the AR is not a ugly rifle to me. What makes them look like hell is when the owner changes out the stock and hangs 25 pounds of accessories on one and shoots paper at 25 and 50 yards while wearing cammo gear, black boots and a beret.

Im not old (22) but the newer style ARs don't really do it for me
That said, an A1esque Dissipator is about the sexiest gun Ive ever seen (especially with wood furniture...woo wee!

Dream gun...i will build one some day

Beauty is in the eye of the b.... um, AR holder.
I don't find them attractive but all my sons love 'em to death.
Me? I like walnut and blue in a traditional configuration. But then, muzzle loader guys might have felt the same about the first breech loaders and repeating rifles

This is my next .22LR build:

Might want to look up 'CJ'...

lol

Yeah as a Jeep owner look up amc's contribution to the Jeep during the brief time they called the shots

Lets just say that things got so bad that Chrysler's ownership actually IMPROVED things.

Amc's claim to fame was making some of the absolute baddest vehicles around that unfortunately had a habit of either falling apart or "returning to the earth" within 4 years.

As to ugly. I don't think so.

I rather like the aesthetics and slim lines.

I find cheap people don't like AR's. I like single shot, bolt guns and lever rifles too and I have one or two of each. I also have 6 AR-15'a and two AR-10's. I don't touch the other guns anymore.

I grew to love them 40 years ago, still do, own several with the A2 configurations being my favorites even though todays guys like the flattops with optics. my favorites are my AR10A2s. Armalite of course.

Aesthetically they ain't bad, but in general they bore the living hell out of me. Not that they're boring to shoot or anything, but the AR obsession that exists has made me totally apathetic towards them.

I think Longrifle's response is the best I've read.
That's not even a modern AR at the top. That looks like the A-1. Post a picture of a Rock River Arms Coyote Carbine, then some may not be so quick to say it's ugly. If not, no big deal. I had a Colt Model 6731 Flat Top Competiton HBAR 16" carbine. I placed in the money many times with it at the Knob Creek Assault Rifle Match; in fact; I earned enough prize money to pay for it plus the scope and rings. I sold that rifle, and at the time I did not want to; and I told myself I would replace it one day. These days there are models available without the front sight post, I don't like that front sight post. Last Summer I finally was able to order whatever AR I wanted(inside $1500). I bought the Rock River Arms Coyote Carbine, not the one with the ACE Skeleton stock(although that's a good looking stock). I bought mine when RRA just started selling them with the new stock that holds 4 AA batteries or 6 CR123 Lithiums. In my opinion, any flat-top with optics mounted will look better than an AR with a carrying handle. I like an AR, and it might pay off big if a bunch of zombies come(LoL). But my most favorite rifle of all is the bolt-action hunting rifle. I like beautiful wood and deep rich bluing and I also love the Sako Finnlight with it's synthetic stock and rubber panels. A good synthetic stock has axe-handle toughness. Anyway, I think the more modern AR rifles that are flat-tops without front sight posts are better looking than the early model at the top of the page. There are so many different AR's out there, and although they have the same-looking receivers, they can look very different from one another with all the different accessories.
Many good responses. I can appreciate the utility side and the tool and car analogies. Makes a lot of sense why you would want one. Those are all reasons my buddy has 3. My main question was referring to their appearance. Unfortunately some people don't know how to 'enlighten' people. I may have to shoot my buddies a few more times to see if it's looks 'grow on me'.

Great response from Friendly, Don't Fire.
Beauty and function are sometimes one and the same, yet, sometimes beauty and function are NOT the same, it makes the object no less good at what it does just because it does not have beauty!

My brass casings do their job, they are not shiny, gold-plated cases, they are simply cleaned brass cases which function to allow for a controlled explosion inches from my face, propelling a spin-stabilized projectile at extremely high RPM's coupled with extremely high velocity. The AR allows me to safely shoot that cartridge (inches from my face) and offers an extremely-rapid follow-up shot if it is needed, or another one, and yet another one, yet, even more (times thirty, times however many full-magazines I may have on my person).

My AR is not pretty, there is no walnut wood with figured-grain on it and polished with 23 coats of polish. However, its beauty is in how simple it is and how functionally simple it is to shoot, and how reliable it is at shooting it many times!

If I wanted pretty, I would buy something made in England, like a $35,000 double barrelled shotgun. However, if I had that kind of money, having a pretty gun like that would not interest me in the least. If an AR is UGLY, I will take UGLY every time.

Thats hitting the Nail right on the head... LOL.. :neener:
Ar's look great, shoot great and would blow away any mosin, lever rifle or similar in a modern day battle.. Sorry but Ar's are beautiful!!

I love my "ugly, warty, bumpy, wood-free" AR. 20 years from now, someone will start a thread about how ugly laser guns are with their battery packs and wires while posting about the nostalgia of AKs and ARs

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder......

And they are "metallurgical masterpieces"

But then I am a machinist......I see a lot more than most in them! And all firearms for my 2 cents....:D

Thank You Cesiumsponge for a prime example as well as some of the artful wooden soldiers from above!

After being carried by warriors for almost 50 years, I think it's proven itself enough not to be judged by it's looks.

I fell in love with the Colt Battle rifle's in the Marine Corps. I was raised on guns, my father competed at the Masters and several other big matches while I was growing up. Thanks to my father, I was a good shot at 17 years old in 1994; but the Marines made an even better shot out of me when they taught me about breath control and firing during the "natural pause." All the "snapping in" paid off I'm sure also. That rifle is so awesome. I just couldn't believe my eyes when I scored a "possible" at the 300 meter rapid fire(all ten rounds in the black), and I was actually amazed that I hit 7 out of 10 Chest size targets at 500 Meters; I know for sure I could have hit all 10 if there wasn't a 15 mph crosswind at Camp Pendleton that day. All with open sights. I wasn't even the platoon high shooter, nor the Company high. I did get second highest score of the platoon at 243/250. My platoon(1058) got old beat up M-16's too; and my battle rifle still shot that good. I envied the recruits of platoon 1057, they had brand new, never-before issued Colt M-16A2 Battle Rifles(3-round burst). Same as mine, but mine was banged up.

It was my experience with the Colt's in the military that made me decide to buy a Colt 6731 Competition HBAR Flat-Top in 1999 when I got out. My Colt 6731 HBAR put 5 rounds in a half-inch at 100 yards off the bench. I'll never forget it, the five holes on the target were positioned just like the "five" side of dice. I never could duplicate a half-inch group after that(not with 5 rounds anyway); but at least I know it did it once! I hated that I had to sell that rifle; but now I am even more pleased with my RRA Coyote Carbine. It's amazing how accurate the AR-15's are. My Dad dreams of a Les Baer AR, and I wouldn't mind having a Wilson Combat AR.

This made me laugh because its true. I love just about everygun I see, except the ones that really give fisher price a run for its money.

I had every intention of my AR remaining a true, "black rifle." But I was in Buds Guns tonight and they were out of black PMags with windows so I had to buy the dark earth colored ones. Shoot, now I'll have to have furniture to match.
