Is this worth buying. Obviously you need the receiver. But is that it, and what does a "decent" receiver cost", something that will take abuse. I have seen them priced from $50 and up. If this actually works reliably, it may make a good spare rifle to have around.
The Email came from Classic today. It would be a $400 dollar AK, at $349.00, plus 30 for my FFl to order. No Mag either but they sell tapco's.

A lot of the current parts kits don't include the barrel, either, so don't forget to factor that in.
Putting together an AK isn't as simple as building Legos or assembling an AR... there is a fair amount of specialized tooling required. If it's going to be your only one, it will be a lot less expensive to purchase a completed rifle.

I wouldn't buy the kit, but then I've never really been a fan of the AMD's stock. To build it you'll need a AMD specific receiver, or at least the rear trunion to attach the stock. If you want a standard fixed stock you may be able to build using a standard AK receiver, but I'm not positive on that.

Also, I don't believe those come with barrels so you'll likely have to source a US made barrel for the project.

Ad on Classic states that it comes with a newly made (non-chrome lined) US barrel.

I'd pass. For a few hundred more you could get a completed Zastava build.

Matching Numbers - New US Barrel - Newly Parkerized AK Variant Specially Priced at $ 349.99

This is the coolest concept to come down the pipe in a long time.
The hard parts are already done for you, and the neatest thing is No FFL is Required. We ship direct to you.

We call it the Backyard Builder Kit.

These are Ultra High Quality and They Will Go Fast.

Kit Includes:New US mgf. (non-chrome) 16.5” barrel, pressed into the front trunnion and properly headspaced. Checked with Go/No-Go Gauges and live round. (Disclaimer for legal reasons - Headspace must be rechecked by a competent gunsmith after final assembly ) .

Original Bolt, Carrier and Piston will actually come complete and seated into upper assembly

Rear Sight, Gas Block, and Front Sight installed in proper alignment and Parkerized

All Major Parts have matching numbers. Gas Tube, Receiver Cover numbers match if numbered.

New Parkerizing on All Parts

All parts are original AMD 65 with the exception of the New US Barrel7.62x39 Caliber

Note - rear trunnion rivets must be removed (drilled) by end user

Photo Shows all parts included and is representative of the kits offered.

No Receiver Included.

End User would be responsible for building to 922r compliance standards. U.S. barrel installed counts as one part.

Note - ( A U.S. mag not included would count as 3 more ) Rifle in this configuration would need 6 parts total for U.S. 922r compliance,

I would suggest a Tapco trigger set and U.S. mag as the easiest way to complete the parts count. This would actually = 7 parts total.

Note 2 -We suggest Tapco AK mags for these . They are U.S. made ( so count as compliance parts ), come in 10,20, and 30
round capacity and we have them at a great price. Know that the vertical fore grip on an AMD 65 will sometimes make the
insertion of 30 round mags difficult due to having to angle the mags around the grip to insert.
They will go in and out but the clearance is tight. However, the 20's work great and look good in the rifle.
The trunion is there along with the barrel, all the info is in the listing.

Hungarian AKs are some of the best made.
I bought several of these when the kits were cheap, (like $69.95) and they had the original barrel ... but it was only a 12" barrel so you had to extended it, replace it, SBR it or build a pistol.

One of the nice things about these kits is the AMD-65 is that they are AKM's so other AKM parts will interchange, like the 16" Romanian barrel, gas pistons & rear trunnions so you can use whatever stock you want.

I built 4 of these kits into different configurations using Tapco receiver flats, and compliance parts. the 3 rifles got Romanian barrels, gas tubes and one a Romanian rear trunion for a solid stock. One I drilled out to use a Romanian underfolding stock & trunion and the last receiver I notched to use the AMD side-folding stock ... however the first one I built was a pistol. All 4 were parkerized, but for some reason I've still never gotten around to painting them.

Building an AK is nothing like building an AR, even if you buy a receiver.

The compliance parts I used in the rifles; receiver, trigger, hammer, sear, gas piston & muzzle break ... these parts used to be available in a kit from Tapco. I used these so I could use authentic furniture & mags (pistol doesn't need compliance parts as 922r only applies to rifles)
