All American Derringers are equipped with a manually operated Hammer Block type safety. The safety automatically disengages when the hammer is cocked.

I showed that to my friend, who, in turn showed it to someone else. They did some calculations and found the .45-70 round would have about 3 times as much power out of a zero-lenght barrel as a .45 ACP would out of a normal-length barrel.

I have a friend who fired one of those with Remington factory 45/70 ammo. His wrist was in a brace for weeks. And he's a serious roll your own kind of handgun hunter. NOT for the timid.

I guarantee that if you fired even a low power 45-70 out of that pistol, it would fly out of your hands and straight into your face. That would suck LOL

A friend fired one and I asked him what the recoil felt like. He said "Raise your right hand as high as you can. Then, as hard as you can slam it down palm open on a wooden table"
Its a Model 1 frame that someone attached a Model 4 barrel to. Not the first time I've seen it, but not very common either.

Who cares about the velocity!! A 60-plus caliber hole 26 inches long!!! Nice!
To provide some reality: just put some duct tape (gloves will work too) on the web of your shooting hand to keep the hammer from taking a bite during recoil; and let the thing ride (rotate) in your grip- keeping your pinky and 4th finger down tight to prevent dropping it. After that, its just a big "Wow! That's a kick!" for recoil. But its not destructively painful for most people.
