I spent the Memorial Day weekend in the LA and San Diego area. I felt that I since I was in would be in LA for a wedding, it would be a quick drive to San Diego to visit a friend of mine in the navy after all, he just returned from overseas. I didn't get hang out with him but I did get to hang out with another friend and ended up going shooting at American Shooting Center out in San Diego. This place was great. The retail/pro shop was well lit and clean, the people were friendly and helpful and most importantly, there were plenty of lanes for shootings. In the San Jose area, there aren't any indoor ranges that let you shoot rifles, so I didn't think to bring my AR-15s down with me, but American Shooting Center lets you shoot up to .308 winchester according to there webpage www.gotammo.com anyway, if you are in the San Diego area and looking for a place to shoot, consider American Shooting Center

I took a handgun course there recently. Nice range, kinda pricey. I normally shoot at Discount Gun Mart down by Sea World, Project 2000, in El Cajon/Rancho San Diego, or in out in Jacumba.

Used to shoot there when I lived in San Diego. Last time was just over 5 years ago. Kinda pricey, but clean, good people, and a good selection.

I got badly burned by Discount Gun Mart and stopped shopping and shooting there. Again, this was a long time ago. People there are most likely different now.

My favorite place to buy down there was Mission Armory, but I believe they are gone now.

Yeah, it is nice to be able to shoot rifles there, except when you get put next to someone shooting an AR-15 carbine or any short-barreled centerfire. :what: You can feel the shockwave and it's loud even with muffs and plugs. The worst is being on an end lane, with a rifle shooter next to you. You get the blast from one side, plus the reflection off the wall on the other

Doesn't bother me all that much, I usually just wait for them to finish their string, but I'd hate to expose a newbie to that sort of thing.

They told me they allow up to .300 Win Mag, but that was a while back. Maybe they have backed off to .308 since then. Been meaning to shoot my M1A and 8mm Mauser there, but haven't had the time.

Good range, but their gun prices are nuts.

I used to shoot there from time to time. It sure beat driving out to the desert. The ammo was really overpriced, though. Just bring your own.

They let me shoot my Mosin but not 7mm Mag.

Last I heard, Mission Armory had closed it's doors, and not too long after Rick Johnson closed his doors (in California, at least).

Beware Discount Gun Mart. I tried ordering a Uberti rolling block from them when I was back in San Diego long enough for it to matter. Those people took my money and strung me along for a few weeks before I got sick of it, and went to Mira Mesa Collectables. No range there, but much better people and a friendlier store. Both had grungy floors: the first because they never bothered to clean it, the other because the stuff they had shed that delightful sort of grunge that old metal and cosmo provides.

Glad some of you had good experiences at American Shooting Center. I went there once, and decided that I'd sooner drive 100 miles out to the desert in August than give them money. Guess thats changed, which is a good thing. Have to go by there next time I see my parents.

I thought $15 for a lane for as long as you wanted it was reasonable. In the San Jose area they are charging 10 or 12 for an hour or fraction of an hour at the indoor ranges.

I brought my own guns and ammo down, so I didn't get to experience overprice range ammo and gun rentals.

I thought the targets were expensive, but the whole free targets with ammo purchase thing is nice.

I was at the mercy of my friend, because was familar with the area and I wasn't. I think I turned him on to the joys of a .22 lr handgun

The best range I've found in San Diego besides the drive out to Jacumba is Lemon Grove Rod and Gun Club I just became a member. It is a private range but very fair in price, if you can find a current member to sponsor you I would look into it, there are currently a few open positions.
