Ok so as the dollar falls, more and more people are suggesting increasing ammo stocks under the premise that ammo will eventually become a kind of currency immune to inflation.

But is this really going to work? I made a trade with a fellow recently for a rifle and a quantity of ammo. He was honest enough to let me know that he found a few duds in one of the quantities of ammo.

But what if we fast forward to a future where ammo is used as currency. How do you determine if the ammo is still good? Or does the ammo become a mere token with no expectation of actual consumption?

If the value of the ammo is still dependant on actual quality, does that mean that only large lots of the same ammo is worth stockpiling? I mean, if I have to shoot 20-50 rounds to be sure of quality, and I am looking to buy 200 rounds, I’ll lose 10-25% just to check the quality. If I look to trade it off, that guy will have to lose another 16-33% to check the quality. At the end of two trades, 20-50% of the original ammo is gone.

I guess my fundamental question is, how is the ammo-economy suppose to work?

when a federal reserve note becomes completely and utterly worthless (getting closer everyday), then I'd say you better be ready to barter with anything. That includes TP, diapers, baby bottles... if someone has a need, whatever they want is worth something to them, including ammo.

It works like seashell goat dung currency.
What are those and where can I get a bunch of them? :neener:

There's no way to tell aside from ammo that looks like it went through a meat grinder or has good primer strikes. If society got that broken down and we were living in a Mad Max world I think you'd take what you can get (as opposed to "Aw dang that's wolf, I don't shoot that crap in my AR")

The only way that it would be used as currency is if people need to use it daily to defend their life, in which if they don't have ammunition they will most likely die.

In our current situation in society it is a good idea to carry and also express your rights as an individual but chances are very very low that if you don't carry or have ammunition that your going to die.

When theres no more structure and a dollar bill is worth absolutley nothing in the market thats when ammunition will be worth its weight in gold. People will probably be trading firearms and/or ammuntion for food and supplies to survive, as well as stocking up on it for personal protection that will be needed in the state that I've described.

Jeremiah the tv series is a good example of this ;)
However, its just tv.

Why fart around with ammunition trying to trade it like sea shells or tobacco leaves.
Buy as much silver bullion and gold as you can.
Check out KITCO, Goldmoney.com, MJPM.
Why would I want to trade for your 9mm ammo when I don't own a 9mm.
Why would you think the lady next door with the peach tree would want to trade .22 lr for a bushel of peaches?
During past inflation crises I don't recall ever reading about trading ammunition for goods.
I have read about trading cell phone minutes for goods and service in Afraca.

SHTF threads like this are not really within the purview of THR.

Besides, anyone who knows anything realizes that the true post-apocalyptic currency will be bottle caps. :)
