I don't quite have inventory tags but that would be really cool!:what:

I just shake my head. How does one forget about ammo ? Especially these days with it being so dear.
During flush times I buy, be it loaded ammunition or reloading components. I see a good price or sale I buy. Then I just squirrel it away and never give it a thought. My problem is I don't always squirrel away in the same place. I have been working on my organizational skills. Be out with the wife at for example Walmart. I always check the ammo. No clue how many boxes of 45 ACP Winchester white box 100 rounds I bought because when we get home I may toss it in my gun room or office area and often just leaving it in the store bag. I do have a handle on primers because they are all in the same place. Just sold 43 pounds of powder I had some dating back to mid 90s. Sold it for $12 a pound buyer take all. Anyway during lean times I buy more than I need or shoot and do not always remember where I put things.

Ron.

I used to reload a few hundred rounds at a time, and would alternate between calibers. I would load 300 rounds of .38 spl, then shoot a .45acp for 2 years. By the time I started with .38 again, that ammo was already put away. When reloading, you just go make more when you can't find it, so you don't look too hard. 10 years later, your not even thinking about it. Then you go to clean the bins of stuff you haven't looked in in 14 years, and for me, you find: Appx 200 5.56, with another 100 bullets, 800 .38 spl, with another 200 bullets, 350 .380 ACP, 300 45ACP, 400 9mm, 120 9mak 150 12 gauge, and 1100 22lr.
Factory ammo is probably the same. Just before the panic I bought 500 rounds of Tulammo .308 for $150 from TSUSA and 80 rounds for $20 from a store clearance sale. At those prices, I imagine people don't keep track of it all that much. A lot of people remember when 7.62x39 went from 10c/round to 45c/round, so when it dropped down to 15c/round during the trump lull, lots of people bought it, as well as eastern European .308, 223, 9mm. You'll be reading about people finding those 500 rounds of .223 they bought for 20c/round in a few years.

Ammo gets misplaced, just like tools, carparts, and anything else

I just wish I could find some primers that I forgot about...:D

Funny I did that too. I thought I had a few thou SPP's and "found" an ammo can with 5 thousand SPP's and 5k shotshell primers. I don't shoot any international skeet any more where I burned a lot of ammo left a "I want to trade" even steven for 5k SPP's and got a taker, that put me in the green for a long time. I have to dig around my bench more often.

When I decide to spend time in my grungy basement man space , known in this clan as the BAT CAVE , (mature eh?) , I do so to enjoy and relax. I use paper and pencil to keep a running inventory , and it is reasonably accurate.
Using a computer to be dead nutz accurate ..... no.

I used MS Excel to get a rough inventory of my ammo some years back. The total was a bit higher than I thought it would be. I am not interested in doing that again. Same reason I don't count my guns. I don't want to lie to anyone when they inevitably ask how many I have. I don't know and that is good enough for me. :)

It isn't a bad idea to set aside a little extra ammo when it is cheap and stash it somewhere out of the way. That way you don't find yourself empty during times like the last year. One strategy I have heard for years is to buy a box or two of ammo each week or month (whatever is affordable). After a while, you will accumulate quite a bit.

This is exactly the same as buying the same record or CD a few times because you have an expansive collection and forget what you have and what you don't. At least with ammo, you can actually use it, versus listening to the same CD of the same music 3 times over...yeah...ask me how i know.

Between me and my dad, we've got 3 copies of Blazing Saddles on VHS, 2 copies on DVD and 3 on BluRay. I think we've got it covered until the next format change.

To be honest with all of you I am not as bad as I made myself out to be but just having some fun in the thread. I have no idea how much factory ammo I have either. I do know WHERE every nugget of it is though.

What I am anal about is my reloading record keeping. Each reloading session gets a lot number which is put on a label attached to the box or can or whatever method of the month I choose to store ammo. That way any ammo issues can be traced back to my records. Help keep me from blowing my fool head off.

Well, yes, and the clearly superior program QuattroPro.

Neither much ride on my shoulder an note if I grab a box or two of ammo to give to a buddy, or when a buddy drops off a couple, and I set them on top of the top of the beer fridge.

Perhaps if I had only one or two or three calibers and only one or two styles or manufacturers, that would be different. Just a rough count of calibers is more than a dozen, and there's easily a dozen brands and styles of those.

Were I setting up such a thing, I'd probably set it up with one caliber per workbook. Now, whether to sort those by loading, or by manufacturer, I could only guess. For rimfire, I'd be sore tempted to sort by Favorite per Weapon (since the M44 'likes' different ammo than the N66, etc.)

The real hassle would be in setting up all the macros to keep the thing populated accurately.

Why would I use a spreadsheet software for inventory?

For those who do not have Microsoft Office using Excel consider Open Office using Calc. Open office is a free equivalent of MS Office software.
Anyway if I wanted to keep a running inventory of ammunition (or anything else) I would be using Microsoft Office Access or in Open Office Base. Base is aimed more at data base applications like Access. I am not saying Excel won't work, merely that I see Access or Base as better solutions for inventory maintaining or control, including guns.

Both allow the use of Macros as CapnMac mentions above.

QuattroPro I agree is good stuff but as a part of a Corel Suite also cost. Again, it is also a spreadsheet program like Excel. I guess I just lean towards a database type software for inventory purposes. buy to each their own.

There is a certain elegance about pencil and paper. That paper isn't going to get accidentally deleted, overwritten, crash or get encrypted by malware. And this is from a guy who works with technology every day.

That said, my info is kept in Excel. :D

I had been through the shortage during Obama's term and learned my lesson. When prices dropped throughout 2019-2020 I ordered enough ammo and reloading supplies to last me a while. 22 was so cheap I kept ordering it. I'm in the process of selling my house, and in getting my reloading room in order found a case of 22's in my closet which I didn't know was there. I think we call that a good day.:)

I keep my ammo in a very small lock box. I am willing to bet there are some members that have more ammo in their truck than I have on hand right now. Even in that confined space there is ammo I forget I had. The Mrs got a box of Aguila ammo in 9mm. Don't remember when, I think it was with a gun purchase. Found it in my ammo pile. I know I was the one that put it there because I have the codes to get in. But I forgot about it. That has happened to other ammo too. I found a box of 38 SPL that had been buried for about 6 years. And I don't even have a 38 to shoot it in anymore. Forgetfulness happens.
Need my shipping address?

People drive cars & trucks and forget to refill the tank so it's easy to forget ammo.

I'm just the opposite I forget I have ammo & buy more. It's not long & I start running out of places to store it.
Since the shortage & I can't buy any. I have been going through doing some organizing & I have found a lot of ammo & calibers I didn't know I had. I may have to sell some at a little higher price than I bought it. There is no way I would gouge people like some places are doing.

This thread inspired me to do an inventory of my ammo. I realized I have WAY too much .32 ACP, and not nearly enough 9mm Luger. I suspect more than a lifetime supply (for me more of an occasional shooter) of .22 LR.

I also found 150 rounds each of calibers I no longer own (7.62 Nagant and .38 S&W).

I have dedicated boxes for my shooting interests-Rimfire, center fire handgun, center fire rifle, black powder. Went through my rifle box for the first time in I forget how long, found 100 rounds of 30/06 and several boxes of 32 ACP for my cartridge adapters.

Every time I see the title of this thread I remember the box of 10mm Auto ammunition I have under the front seat of my Xterra.

I frequently "find" ammo/reloading stuff I didn't know I had. Most recently 2 cases of PMC 5.56 and 2 cases of Danish SS109, I was a happy camper!

I found some more. Yesterday while looking for some Mauser stripper clips, I found three boxes ago 40 S&W and one box of 45 Auto. They were in a 20mm ammo can along with a bunch of other ammo in ziplock bags.
I did eventually find the stripper clips.

Funny you mention Mauser stripper clips. Just a few days ago I found some I think were for a 6.5 Swede Mauser. I don't own one but found brass and strippers for one. :)
