I went to Academy earlier and while the wife was shopping, was looking at ammo, just to see what’s available. I haven’t really looked in about 2 years.

The common calibers of 9mm, 40S&W, 45 auto, 380 acp, 38 special, 223, and 30-06, were all available.

The only less than common caliber available was 45 Colt at the cost of $65 per box of 50.

Plenty of 22s available in short and long rifle, for about $5 a box. Not bad and very glad to see it.

Shotshell were up a few dollars a box. Remington heavy dove loads were $12 a box, whereas they were $10 the last I checked.

No primers and only 1 pound of powder, CFE pistol. I didn’t note the prices on either.

I sure am glad I’m a reloader and bullet caster. Thankful I have a working stock of primers and 22s.

I do feel for those folks that don’t reload or are just getting started. It must be tough as heck.

They get primers regularly and they go out the door just as quickly as they come in. They have them about half the time I go in, which is weekly.

I have 20000 various primers
10-12000 various bullets
1000 lbs of lead
1000s of once fired cases
20something pounds of various powders
All the equipment and knowledge to make these components into loaded ammo.

I have loaded about 100 rnds in the last 5 years.

….and I have an undisclosed amount of factory loaded ammo.

Sometimes it’s just easier to buy it. (Says me who has 3 jobs and is hunting most of the rest of the time)

Even before the last Great Unpleasantness, Academy never stocked reloading supplies reliably. There was always a range of Hornady bullets at normal prices and some random assortment of primers and Hogdon powders. Usually just H355, Tightgroup, Longshot, and H110.

Most of my primers came from the local Academy. I usually would buy a pad or two every time I got paid.

Oh well.

Ammoseek is still pretty handy for people who are allowed to use a credit card.

My Academy stocks the largest Shoot N See targets and good Asics running shoes, so it’s an ok place to visit.

Iirc they charge a good bit higher for plinking .308 ammo (or anything else) than most of the prices on the first page of Ammoseek, —Even with shipping added to online purchases.—

My nearest Academy is over a 100 miles away. The only time I travel to that town is for medical care that I can't get here an usually just want to return home as quickly as I can. I used to order ammo online from them when they had free shipping over a certain dollar amount. Then that went away after covid arrived. I don't know if that has changed or not as I haven't visited their website in quite sometime.

I have bought a lot of ammo at Academy lately. 9mm range ammo goes for $12-14 a box which isn't bad for these days. Last time I went they even had primers! On the shelf! Not behind glass or an armed guard. I bought a few hundred so I can start load development at some point.

Darn it... I was in Academy the other day and forgot to check for primers. My mind was on fishing stuff... not to mention the wife was "making sure we left on time".

My local one had small pistol primers from Winchester and CCI, as well as large pistol primers from Winchester the last time I looked. No small rifle or large rifle to be found but that's not unusual lately.

I understand that Academy charges no HAZMAT fee, and shipping is "free" with $50 purchase. But you really have to watch the website to catch them when they're in stock online...I've not yet been successful.

The cost today for loaded ammo, reloading equipment and such can become very cost prohibitive for an awful lot of people.
I reload and shoot my stuff. I have more than enough factory ammo to see me through the next 25 years as well. Haven't had a need to by brass, primers, power or bullets for the last 10 years. Im good to go.
Seeing these prices make me wonder how the common man is getting by. Shoot I was in Cabela's last week. Ammo and guns were so ridiculously priced, I had a short trip in there.

I think the common man aint getting by. I know I couldn't afford to shoot anything other than rimfire if I didn't reload, and seldomly something like 9mm. Reloading of course is a fun hobby, but the cost savings is enormous.

I know a guy that he restricts himself to guns in common calibers, not common to us reloaders, but 9mm, 30-30, 45 auto, 38/357. He can't afford to shoot the 30-30 much now... either. He's never had a gun in 45 colt or 44 Special or 44 Magnum. He just walks on by guns so chambered, for those more commonly chambered. It's one of the great things about reloading, you're not limited to the common calibers because of cost or availability.
