If I load up 1,000 rounds and want to store them in an ammo can, how are those used? Do you just put the rounds in the ammo can or pack them into boxes of 50 and place those in the ammo can?

I was also wondering about this. Once they are in an ammo can is it ok to keep them in the garage?

Do your best to keep the temps in the low 90's or cooler.

But even then, being a little on the warm side isn't anywhere near as bad as wild temp fluctuations or high humidity.

Hum I run a fan in the garage during the summer so its a little cooler in there for the dog when he is not in the house but it gets pretty humid here. Now I am torn.

No desiccant is necessary if the ammo can seal & lid are in working condition.
The only possible way moisture can get inside one is if you put it in there in the first place.

GI ammo issued in cans contain no desiccant, and can be stored indefinitely pending use in combat or training.

I like to use zip-lock bags just for convenience when it comes time to take some out and use it.

IF your seals are air tight and you run a small desicant pack, you should be fine. But ONLY IF your lid seals are good.

When I buy a new batch of them, I just wipe the seals down with alcohol to clean them, then treat them with some silicone spray to rejuvinate them a bit.

I have 50 cal cans and 30 cal cans, just so you know i like the 30 cal cans better, the 50s are pretty heavy when they are full,:d

Packing pretty much depends on how much of a neatnick you are. I'm a slob, so I don't bother with boxing the rounds up - I just fill the can. 50 caliber cans for longer-term storage, 30-caliber for range-ready. As CSA 357 says, full 50s are pretty heavy:cuss:.

If you're putting one load in the can, bulk will allow you more inside; living here in FL, I do leave some outside in those cans, but they are air/water tight and have dessicant in them - otherwise, I find a small place inside in a spare closet so the temp differences aren't great

Ten 50 round boxes will easily fit in a .50 cal ammo can. Depending on what ammo. Ammo cans should have a gasket to keep moisture out. Don't store ammo in a humid place. Cool and dry is best.
.30 cal cans are too small. Just as handy for other stuff though.

I decided to try the bulk packing and ziplock bag combination... I loaded 500 .357 magnum today putting 50 in each labeled, sandwich size ziplock. So far it seems like a good way to keep things organized if I want to put different types of projectiles in the same can.

BTW 500 .357s fill less than half a .50 cal ammo can. Full it may be too heavy to steal ;)

I can get 6 boxes of .45's in a .30 can. Only 300 rounds, but I can mix up different loads with no worry. And I've got dozens of the cans.

As far as bulk, I only do that with .22's and surplus 7.62x54R ammo. I buy the 500-550 rnd. .22 bulk packs, and just dump 'em in. The 54R, I open the spam cans and put the paper wrapped cartridge packages into the GI cans.
