For a social shotgun, how do you carry extra ammo? Do you stick some ammo loose in your pocket? Do you wear a bandoleer? If so, how do you conceal it if you have to be discreet? Do you have a belt pouch of some sort and if so, what type? What methods have you found to work best.

My scenario is I have an 870 with a 12 1/2 inch barrel and folding stock as my social piece. It can be concealed if needed yet provides a visual deterent should I feel that the situation deems it. I want to have extra ammo available if needed but running around with bandoleers like Pancho Villa does make one tend to stick out. I can't see needing more than 25 rounds but if the method carries more that would be OK. I am leaning toward some sort of shoulder bag with extra ammo and possibly a belt pouch that holds 5-10 rounds for immediate use.

Ammo would be a mix of slugs and buck, with the majority slugs.

The firearm has ghost ring sights and provides ample firepower out to distances that are likely to be encountered for self defense. It is legal, papered and I am aware about using it for defensive purposes and any legal issues of using an NFA firearm for defense.

You're carrying a shotgun concealed? Why for do you wanna be discrete???? My coach gun has a five shot sleeve on the stock with 1 slug and 4 #3 buck (20 gauge). Easy to slide off when I wanna go hunting with it. It usually sits in the bedroom that way and I shuck the sleeve when I go hunting with it.

I know of NO one that tries to conceal a shotgun. But, then, I know of no one with a class three "sawn off", either. I just sorta figured CCW is what handguns are for, and compact ones at that!

Why am I getting this picture of Mel Gibson checking his guns at the Thunderdome????

DD,

Having the need now and again to conceal a SBS on the job, I use this to carry spare ammo on the belt discreetly with a cover garment.

12-GAUGE SHOTGUN SHELL POUCH. Nylon pouch measures 4"x 7" and features two snap closures and two A.L.I.C.E. belt clips. Designed to hold ten 12 or 20 gauge shotgun shells securely by elastic loops. Specify Olive Drab, Black, or Camouflage. NEW.
AP1409 . . . . . $6.95ea.

They can be found here, about halfway down the page: http://www.imsplus.com/ims1c.html

Also, Safariland makes a 2 round plastic belt carrier that is about the size of a revolver speedloader carrier.

I've got a couple of methods.

One is on-gun carry. I do this when I have a standerd stock attached. Sidesaddle and buttcuff.

Another is I've got a couple of cheap nylon bandoleers. Hold 25 rounds each.

Another is I've got a bag. A videocamera bag, to be specific. Divided compartments mean I can keep slugs in one, and buck in the other

.

A messenger or courier bag should work. There are also plenty of mil-surp type bags that are designed for shoulder carry as well. In a bug-out situation, such a bag would be nice for ammo, plus an MRE, a pad & pencil, a map, matches, compass, and minor first aid supplies.

How about a standard issue hunting vest?

Packing lots of shotgun ammo and other stuff comfortably all day, and fast access to reloads, is what they are designed for.

The built-in game bag can carry a lot of bottled water, first aid kits, or whatever.

The plain old brown canvas ones would blend in pretty well, if you didn't like the Camo Turkey hunter models, or the Blaze Orange ones better.

Military pouch -12 rounds is the right size for carry & maneuver. Also sidesaddle or buttcuff sleeve. Get a dump pouch for training, but this is too big & ungainly for actual carry.

That is about as many shells you will ever need for a real SD or barricade situation. If you need more, then there will be too many BGs and you will be overwhelmed anyway.

Question, what kind of slug accuracy can you get from your 12.5" barrel?
