Ammo Chess Set

What would be really cool is if you could do it with cartridges that all have similar rim sizes...then you could drill recesses in the middle of each square so they'd stand up better. Might have to use some with a rebated rim, but it would make it more play-able.

Also, nickel cases would be cool. Sand or cement seems like it would be less messy to fill the cases with than oil. Still a cool idea though!

That is freakin SWEET!

People are knocking using the shells as rooks but they're perfect. A brass cartridge for every piece would be boring. In a practical sense, the king and queen could get confused. I would use a .50 BMG for the king. Also, calling a .45 a pawn will piss off the 1911 guys. Since the pawn is a very limited piece, but necessary, and frequently gets in the way, but can save your ass in the end (big time if you redeem a pawn for a queen), I suggest the .32.

In order to keep the bishop and knight from being mixed up, since the bishop in chess is a pointed piece anyway, the bishop should be the 7.62x39. Also, since the .30 30 was frequently carried on horseback, it should be the horse/knight.

Or ream out the primer pockets to pearch cases on little pegs centered in each square of the board. Less likely to get "knocked" this way too!

Stated for the third time now, this is a gift to my girlfriend primarily for display. I am not very concerned with the pieces wobbling.

If you can't tell a rimless .30-'06 from a rimmed 7.62x54R you've got other probs!

I like the idea of the 7.62x39 to be the Bishop (cone-head).

THE DARK KNIGHT, ya done good. :) I like it. I have been working on my own on & off and just saw this thread and got me in the mood to go try & finish mine. Yours came out very nice and should be a great gift.

very cool id play and the lead/sands not a bad idea less long term mess. i like the idea of a nickel/brass set a brass steel set would also be cool if the cases were dark green like wolf

Very nice...

Live Ammo of course would lend a more sober undertone to the Game...just don't shake the Box hard when wishing to mix them up, I s'pose.

I used to have a very old smaller size Boxwood and Ebony Set...and 'White' King was missing, so I used a late 1870s FA 45-70-450 Round...still 'live'...and it looked really cool there on the Board.

I guess the Squares could be Bull's Eye Targets...Black on White...White on Black...

What fun!

Good going!

Great looking Chess set, hope my son don't see it he will want one. Have something that was made from 7.62x39 shells that works good for paperweight.

That is awesome!

Do you already have guns in each of those calibers, or did friends help you out with some of the cartridges?

I guess we did ours backwards. I did the board first. :) It has bloodwood for the border, with purpleheart & yellowheart for the squares. The pic doesn't show the purple very well though.

Very nice, indeed! Plain brass versus nickel-plated brass as the opposing colors would have worked, too, but the paint job looks great. The only place I've ever seen anything like this was at Disneyland, believe it or not (there's a deliberately rustic-looking improvised cartridge chess set in the queue area of the Jungle Cruise ride).

I believe this post is not considered spamming, but goes along nicely with the this topic which has been around for several months.

9mm for the Pawns
50AE for the Rooks
454Casull for Knights
223 for the Bishops (I now make them as 7.62x93mm, bit bigger than shown)
45-70Gov for the Ladies
and 30-06 for the Kings

The pieces are made from Solid Brass and aluminum
Board is clear acrylic, about 0.175" thick with silk screened 1" squares.

I first came up with the idea about two years ago and just recently started making them.
