I got to thinking about this the other day. My newly acquired Desert Eagle .50 eats ammo at a cost of 1.50 per round. In about a year I will have exceeded the cost of the weapon at $1500. Of all the weapons I have owned, only my 1911 will reach this level.

My Sig.380, most likely not and certainly none of my hunting rifles.

Jusr wondering, how many folks have spent more om ammo than the initial cost of the weapon?

Try feeding a .338 Lapua Magnum!
Or even a 45-70 Govt.

But.....most in these categories who like to shoot a lot (and have the shoulder for it) are reloading.

Lets see I got my first RIA for about $300, Wolf steel cased .45ACP was runing about $110/1000, I shot 1000 rounds the first week I had it, two more cases later (couple of months) I'd spent more on the ammo run through it than I did on the gun. It approaching 15000 rounds now. I shoot a lot more 9mm the past few years for the lower ammo cost, and I'm sure I've spent more on the ammo I shot through it so far than I did for my RIA 9mm 1911.

With ammo prices these days it's not that hard if you shoot a lot. Few thousand rounds of 9mm and you've already shot for what most pistols in that caliber usually go for.

I bought an automobile for $5,000 and drove it for 10 years.

10K miles/yr
X 10 yrs = 100K miles
divided by 25 MPG (average)
= 4K gal fuel
X $3/gal (average fuel cost)
= $12K in fuel cost

So... I paid 2.4X the cost of that car to feed it and this doesn't count oil, etc. :)

I bought a hammer for $5 and used it for 10 years... cost of nails... no need to continue... :D

Actually, I DO get your point. I just don't shoot expensive calibers very often.

I certainly haven't, if you don't count a gazillion rounds of .22RF I shot through cheap .22's in my youth.

If I can't reload for a centerfire gun, I don't buy or own it.

With a .50 DE, reloading can cut your ammo costs by way more then half.

Really not that hard to do, with any gun that you keep for a while and shoot regularly.

Just a tip i bought 220 rounds of 50ae for 225 shipped from the wiscoonsin cartriage co.

My winchester 94 .32 winchester special is expensive at about $30 for a box of 20. It's kind of depressing because I love shooting it. I can't wait until I have reloading equipment, that should help out a little bit.

If we're counting what's in the garage, yes. ALL of 'em. ;)

The exception would be the Mosin Nagant. I've probably fired/stashed right about as much $$$ as the MoNag cost...

$100 is a LOT of milsurp x54R. :D

Try shooting competition for a while. If you aren't burning WAY more in ammo costs than you spent on your gun, you aren't getting anywhere.

A decent practical pistol shooter will put something above 3-4x the cost of a new gun downrange each year. ... if those are cheap reloads. Facory ammo? You don't want to think about it! :)

I know at least one Staffer here who's probably averaging more like 9-10 times the cost of a gun per year.

The owner of my LGS tells n00bs that "Buying the gun is the CHEAP part!" :D

Sam's spot on. I'm not even "competitive" but spend MUCH more on ammo than on guns!

With a couple of oddball exceptions I usually stock more dollars worth of ammo than my guns are worth!

Yeah with any match-grade rifle, feeding it factory match grade ammo will quickly exceed the cost of the rifle. The more exotic the cartridge, the faster this happens. Which is one big reason you find very few shooters of these rifles who do not reload.

Until recently my handgun collection consisted of only .40smith. So for 4 years at about roughly 80 bucks, give or take, every time I shot my guns. I started shooting less and less until it was almost nonexistent.

My dads buddy reloads .40 specifically for us now. We buy the stuff and give him all the brass we can collect. He is as happy as a pig in slop. We have almost 2 Rubbermaid trashcans full of mixed brass. Just fill a couple gallon bags up when we are ready for new ammo.
He has cases upon cases of ammo stacked in his basement. More than any gun store I've been to.

I bought my 10/22 40 years ago for $35. That is less than two 500 round cartons today. I go through two cartons on a Saturday with the grandsons.

I only shoot 9mm and 45, 380 just for function testing, it's a belly gun, and rifles I stick to either 223, or 7.62x39, You have to take these things into consideration before, not after you make your purchase, if you are on a budget, and still want to shoot.
I was going for a different caliber a few times and had to stop and ask myself, do you want to actualy shoot this or just look at it. Same with pistols, I have been a pistol shooter all my life, no comparison to rifles, I got rid of everything, from, 9 or 10 calibers down to 3, my 1911's, and Glock 30, and my Glock 26, and a keltec, which I never shoot anyway, my Lcp is just for a second gun. I believe in carrying 2 when not at home. I have been thinking about a 10mm latelly, it can get the reach with enough power, out of the right gun to justify having one for HD.If I could find one that also converted into a carbine, I would do it.

Indeed
I've probably exceeded the cost of most of my guns with ammo, even the ones that eat cheap ammo. If you aren't regularly doing so, you need to shoot more or admit that you're a collector, not a shooter.

Not sure how old you are Redlg155, but when you get to my age if you haven't shot more in ammo than the firearm originally cost, you either wasted your money on the investment or you have experienced the joy of a few recent purchases!

My problem is that I usually swap most of my collection around every so often. The newness wears off and I end up selling or trading. A few with sentimental value I keep, but everything else gets traded sooner or later.

It's unfortunate for me that I don't get free ammo from the Govt anymore!
