Ammo cost exceded gun value?

I have an Ingram M-11 SMG. I don't even want to think about how much money it has flung downrange.

However, I once calculated that in late-1980s dollars, it consumed $8.63 of .380 ACP per *second* on rock-and-roll.

That was the firearm that got me into reloading. However as Dean Grennell once pointed out, "Reloading doesn't save you money, it just lets you shoot more for the same amount you were going to spend anyway."

As a rule, I don't own anything that I can't load cast bullets for exclusively. If it costs more than 15 cents a round, I'm not interested. The only exception would be when I'm in the mood to load hotter .45-70 rounds, in which case I might use commercial hard cast BHN 18+ bullets that might put me at about 25 cents a round.

None of the guns I currently own have ever fired a factory round, or a jacketed bullet.

I look at it another way.
My .22s have paid for themselves a long time ago.
My handloading pays for itself every week.

Kind of like the wife coming back from a shopping trip and telling you how much she "saved"...well, two can play that game. :)

Jusr wondering, how many folks have spent more om ammo than the initial cost of the weapon?

Try feeding a 12 gauge target gun
One of mine is approaching 200,000 rounds through it - add in clay targets, and I could have bought another house for cash

Typical .30 per round plus .30 per target - .60 X 200,000= $120,000

And that's just ONE of my target guns

Amazing. You wouldn't surprise me if you said you were wearing homespun underwear next!:D

Yeah its pretty easy to shoot more money than the gun costs. The gun is the cheap part for sure if you shoot it.

I haven't shot my snub nose .357 mag that much yet cause it hurts to shoot full loads in it. This reminds me to buy some lighter .38 loads to play with.

I have shot oodles thru the 6 inch .357 tho and love shooting it.

I haven't shot the mosin that much but I have the ammo on hand to do it with. I like it ok and i'll probably keep it around but it doesn't go out to play as much as the other toys.

If you guys think shooting is getting expensive try working at a gun club for a couple years where you can shoot practically any day you are at work. It took a great deal of restraint to not shoot up at least 100-200 rounds of .45acp and 50-100 rounds of .357 mag in a 3 day work weekend. When I did restrain myself from doing that I usually found myself shooting up a few boxes of shotgun shells. I was almost glad the place didn't have a rifle range or i'm not sure I would have had any money left at the end of the week out of my meager paycheck. I didn't reload any of it either but I got a pile of brass and shells now and I do reload shotgun shells.
