Ammo help with Hi-Standard HD Military

I have a 1947 model that's in pretty good shape, and I was wondering what ammunition is recommended for such a pistol. Would firing high velocity ammo cause any problems for it?

I would stick to standard velocity ammo.

The high standard is a very finicky gun.

I have found that CCI does not function well. You will have luck with cheap federal, aguilla, wolf target match, jagd sk, rws, etc...

You want to remove the barrel and test each different ammo (by brand) by dropping a round in the empty chamber. If it does not go 'ploink' freely then it will probably not work for you. The high standard has a very tight chamber.

Also, you may have difficulty getting rounds to feed well. This is usually because the magazine needs to be 'tuned'. To do this, you should follow the magazine instructions on the high standard web site: http://www.highstandard.com/magazines.html

You will need to test several brands to find one that is most reliable in your gun.

I believe the gun you are describing has the bull barrel and hammer correct? If so it should shoot any longrifle excluding the super velocities like the stingers. Mine shot CCI exclusivly and I wish I still had it.

Mine has fired anything I can get in the chamber. I haven't tried Stingers or Hornets or Yellow Jackets tho. I just had to put a new hammer pin in mine and I tested it with Remington Thunderbolts and it went thru a box without a hiccup.

Standard velocity Remington. Never a bumble, I could never outshoot the gun. I played with Eley match a few times but never saw a difference except for price. The guns built like a tank so I don't think the HV would bother it, it was just designed around the standard velocity lead round. Bill

Try Winchester or Federal high velocity solids.
These guns will handle any high velocity round just fine and the Winchester Super X or Federal High velocity are great choices.

The older HS were made before the development of the high speed .22lr cartridge. They are not sprung for the extra energy of the cartridge. Weaker springs and high velocity cartridges can cause damage. One of the things to look for on any older HS is frame cracks.

I'm glad I didn't read this thread in 1975 when I traded for my HD Military. I have shot almost every "on sale" 22 known to mankind through it. I don't recall spending the extra money for any high velocity stuff though. It's just been a fail safe pistol for me.

HD Military's are not the same as later model High Standards They are built on the same frame High Standard used for their .380 guns . They were designed for use with high velocity ammo and they do not have the same feed issues that the detachable barrel models have. The H-D's have integral feed ramps and do not usually require the PITA mag tuning that other High standards require. As long as the mag is not beat up it will feed like most other autoloaders.

My HD goes thru boxes of CCI MINI MAGS without a burp. Great shooter.

I have even shot a lot of rem golden bullet HV out of the one I have to the tune of several thousand rounds, Not one bit of damage. On issue is the mag lips do need to be properly adjusted to work well though.
