As I was about to purchase my first handgun after finally getting a handgun license, I found myself wondering... "does the hassle end here?"...

So I got the handgun premise license ($450 + 6 months wait),
So I got the pistol purchase authorization,
So I bought a handgun within 30 days of license issuance and registered it within 72 hours of the purchase (not to mention 10 round mags),
So I finally own the handgun legally in NYC...
So I bought the handgun online from an FFL dealer in Texas who is shipping it to an FFL dealer in NY who will do a transfer for $65...because a handgun at an NYC dealer is close to double the price...

But what good is any gun without ammo... but guess what, the ammo in NYC is also close to double the price and not all kind of ammo is available.

That being said:

Question: Can I buy ammo online from other states(where the prices are reasonable) and ship to NYC? If yes, then where? If not, what are my alternatives?

would you trust UPS to leave a box of ammo at your doorstep or doorman?

i wouldn't.

if you're in the burbs (westchester, long island) then hit places like sports authority for ammo.

Most places will not deliver

ammo to NYC. Your best bet is to take a little trip to NJ and buy it here. Ammo is pretty cheap here, especially at Dick's when they have a sale.

Breakerilya,

The best place to buy ammo is the gun show.

There is dearth of gun shows in New York State but plenty good ones in Pennsylvania, as well as gun stores. There are also gun stores in upstate New York but the gun shows are the best.

The one in Philadelphia Army National Guard – 2700 Southampton Rd (rt. 1) in Phila PA is the most convenient for New Yorkers. That's just an hour and a half from Brooklyn and worth visiting.
The closest one is on August 18-19. If you need to buy a few boxes or cases, that's your best bet.

On the way to/from the show at the PA/NJ border there is a gun shop/range in Bristol
Ammohead, (215) 788-5892, 5800 Elmwood Ave, #F
Bristol, PA 19007

They have good prices for ammo, especially if you order a case in advance.
For $20 you can shoot all day long and you can rent a variety of guns, rifles, machineguns for $10 each in case you want to try different ones. Combining a trip to the show with a session at that range is not a bad way to spend a day.

Why did you go to all that trouble and expense to get a pistol in NYC? You cannot carry it anyway.
For home defence, getting a long-arm permit is much cheaper and quicker.

Can I buy ammo in FL and ship it to my friend Ilya in NYC, legally ???

Ilya, call up local Sport Authority, Bass Pro Shop, WalMart, etc. If not, just go with a box or two of good self defense ammo for now. And we'll do all the shooting once you visit me down here :)

Congrats on the gun, and thanks for fighting behind the enemy lines:evil:

ammo prices on long island are normal, there are a few decent gun shops in west nassau county just go there! you dont need to drive 2 states over for ammo

edit: hi all, first post just figgured id stop lurking and help a fellow nyer out!

+1 on getting ammo outside of the city. Just curious but why did you buy your handgun out of state? You probably could have gotten it for the approx same price by taking a car ride up the Thruway a little and hitting a Gander or a nice Outdoor /sporting goods store.

tnt gunnery, in floral park.

i shop at thier location in seaford because im in east nassau, and i never bought handgun rounds from them, but the .223 and .308 are just above what it would cost me mail order, and they have a huge selection and knowledgable/friendly staff (seaford anyway, but i imagine floral park to be the same) plus thier are others that have been recomended to me, but i'd need to ask for thier names

Plenty of places out on Lawn Guisland to grab some. Only Gander I know of is over in Orange County, and only ammo selling Wal-Mart would be in Orange or Dutchess which is a bit away from NYC. I get most of my stuff through Sportsmansguide however, they do put "small arms ordnance" black stickers on the box so I don't know if that would be an option in an apartment complex.

$9.95 for Winchester USA 40 S&W 180gr FMJ, 50 rds

the best price I've found so far online... is that a good price? are they cheaper anywhere else?

40 S&w?

Your price sounds like something I'd pay here in Nevada at a Wal*Mart.

Don't know pricing in your area, but it doesn't sound like it's out of line.

Oh, and welcome to The High Road.

outdoormarksman.com will ship to me in NYC but you need to be there to sign for it when it comes or come to an agreement w/ your UPS guy to pick it up from his truck.
Otherwise you'll need to drive out to the outer boros or Long Island to get ammo but with gas prices being what they are I'm not sure you'd be saving much

do I have to sign for it personally? or can I ship to a relative for example, because I'm never home during UPS deliveries...
