I am very close to getting my home pistol permit in NYC. I had the interview just last week. However, I just read this article (http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/30/nyregion/30critic.html?_r=1) about how hard it is to buy a pistol in NYC even after you have your permit.

Is this true? Is it really this big of a pain in the <butt>? I just went through quite a long process getting my home permit, I was looking forward to purchasing a handgun right away once I do get the permit.

Also, where is the best place to buy a handgun in NYC for a civilian?

Much Thanks!

You are not required to purchase the pistol within NYC; Long Island or any of the counties north of city can sell you a handgun legally (I once drove from NYC to Albany to get the Kimber .45 I wanted because no one in NYC had it).

I used to buy most of my guns from Skip at Colonial Gun Shop in East Meadow or Chester at Chester's Hunting and Fishing in Ronkonkoma.

You are unlikely to get any sort of discounts at gun shops in NYC; the rents are high and the regulatory burden is heavy.

Shop for prices before you buy.

I have moved to PA a few years ago but when I was lived in NYC I used action sites, or visited Britt firearms in Mineola. It's right at the train station. I have also had good experiences at Coliseum Guns on Hempstead Turnpike. It's right near the Nassau County shooting range. I believe it's called Mitchel Field.
