I'm relatively new to handgun ownership and was wondering what brands of ammo for target practice to use? Im looking for 9mm and 45acp. I found a site thats a ammo and gun price spreedsheet,WWW.gun-deals.com. see "Tula" ammo, aluminum jacket, Red Dog (remanufactured) and Jack Ross. Im wondering if anybody has experience with the above listed ammo,45ACP or 9mm. Thanks in advance for any help offered.

Yeah, probably not the right place for it :).

That said, I tend to avoid anything other than brass cased ammo. That rules out Tula, Wolf (except for Wolf Gold), Barnaul, Brown/Silver Bear, and CCI Blazer Aluminum. Part of that is due to feeling like I'm "wasting" cases that I can't reload. Part of it is just bad experiences I've had with it (mostly the lacquer coating used on some of them gumming up my chambers and causing cases to stick).

I also don't like to shoot reloaded/"remanufactured" ammunition unless I personally loaded it myself.

That said, outside of those quips, I'll use whatever is cheap for target fodder. The regular old red-box Federal at Wal-mart typically tends to be the cheapest locally available stuff. If I'm mail ordering Sellier & Bellot or Prvi Partizan tend to be priced fairly low. A few local gun shops also tend to stock Magtech ammo which is often priced lower in shops (I don't see their loaded ammo as often online though).

Generally though unless I'm just out or don't have much lead time, I try to load my own - even for 9mm. I've got an abundant amount of extra cases available, and since I shoot mostly platted bullets which are pretty cheap (I bought a few thousand Rainier bullets a while back - working through those but when they're gone I'll probably buy more from Berry), my per round cost is a lot less than factory ammo. Yeah it takes time to load them up and "time is money", but as my grandmother used to say "I've got a lot more time than I do money." :D.

You might want to look into Georgia Arms factory reloaded ammo...it's cheap, functions well, and I've yet to have a problem with it that wasn't caused by the gun (ie trying to load HPs into my very simple 1911). I've fired several hundred of their 230gr .45 acp ball round through my XD 45 and my 1911 with accuracy that easily compared to higher priced offerings (it easily outshot both Federal and Fiocchi factory ammo and was on par with soem expensive stuff called HPR). Their 185gr HPs in .45acp are my Xd's preferred diet (I was very impressed with the accuracy). I'd highly recommend it, so much so that, I actually considered not posting here because I don't want to go to buy my favorite loads and find them sold out (as occassionally happens)...haha. In all seriousness, give it a try and I think you'll be happy with it. It has my father convinced that he needs to start trying their 9mm in his Glock 19 (he apparently has a co-worker who also uses the stuff extensively).

usaammo.com has done right by me for new and reman fmj and jhp for my 38+p, .40sw, .45acp, needs.

When I am shopping local I use Cheaper Than Dirt for all of my bulk ammo needs.

Thanks for the advice and other site links. Buy the way.....I beleive I did post in the Handgun General discussion forum, I think it was moved to "legal", then moved back?!
