i own these three guns

1.kahr pm-40 (cc gun)
2.taurus pt-24/7 in 9mm (nightstand)
3.rossi 462 in 357 (truck gun)

this is some ammo i found today(bought one box each) for them and was trying to find out if it is any good

1.winchester 40s&w 165gr full metal jacket 100 rounds target/range
2.winchester 9mm luger 147gr jhp personal protection
3.remington-umc 357 magnum 125 gr semi-jktd hollow points

both of the winchester boxes are white- the remington box is green and white
if this ammo is good i will pick up some more of each.the reason i picked these is
1.they were cheap and 2.they had these in stock.
i will be using these guns for sd/hd and to pass my ccw permit class
there are so many options i dont know what to get i hope i did not waste my money any other suggestions would be great

1. I do not use FMJs for self defense unless I wish to carry a gun that will not feed anything but hardball. In my youth I went many a mile carrying a 1911 with a hollowpoint in the chamber and ball in the magazine. You should not have to do that with a modern gun, but you also have to do enough shooting to convince yourself it is reliable.

2. These have a fair reputation, conventional hollowpoints that may not perform as well as the latest tech, but they will be better than hardball and are cheap enough for you to practice with your carry ammunition.

3. Good stuff, but it will light up your life in that small gun.

For carry, we mostly recommend any premium JHP ammo that will feed reliably in your gun. By that, I mean with the semi-autos especially, you must shoot 200 rounds through it ERROR FREE.

For practice, The white box is as good as anything else. There is also something to be said for training with ammo that is less reliable than your carry ammo, or even randomly loading snap caps into your practice mags to induce a failure to fire, thereby making you practice that drill as well. That may be something you want to train up to.

When I carried a .40 I used 165 gr Hydra-shoks. For 9mm, I am intrigued by the idea of the 147 gr subsonic, thinking it will replicate the .45 ballistics I prefer, but real-life data is not conclusive as to how successful the experiment has been. If I still carried 9mm, I would probably use 124 gr Hydra-shoks. The most popular 9mm defense round is the Speer Gold-dot, but I think this has to do with bulk police department contracts as much as preference.

The good news about the revolver is, you can have a lot more versatility. Those loads will be hot, but you can shoot any .357 or .38 load in that revolver, including the old slow 158 gr .38 loads. I've never carried a .357 for defense, but a couple of years ago, I gave a friend of mine 2 speedloaders and a box of 125 gr Hydra-shoks for Christmas. (Do you see a pattern developing here?)

I don't carry Hydra-shoks anymore, I carry .45 230 gr HSTs, the new Federal line. I roll my eyes a little bit about how some guys who would have carried an older JHP before, but then throw it under the bus when the mfr brings out a new line, like, that older one is bad all of a sudden.

The advice to carry something other than hardball for self defense is right on, and so is making sure that whatever you carry will function reliably in your particular gun.

But always remember - practice is more important than technology. You need to be able to hit what you shoot at first and foremost, only then how the bullets perform is relevant.

For more information about ballistics performance, you might check out the link in my sig.

Cheers!

that is exactly what i was going to use the 40cal ammo for.so what would you recommend for a hp in 40cal

I carry Speer 180gr Gold Dots in my Kahr K40. I think the 165gr might probably be prefered in the PM40 with the shorter barrel. Realistically, any premium self defense ammo should be good to go. I like the Gold Dots because you can buy them for a reasonable price online and actually function test them in your gun. I also like Remington Golden Sabers and the Corbon products. Corbon DPX is supposed to be awesome, but it is expensive. Federal self defense ammo like HST and Hornady TAP are good choices as well.
