Ammo shortage, but

Well as a FFL dealer, all of my normal distrubution channels are gone. They have no supply. I am having to go out to Major retailers and purchase boxes, not cases of ammo so that my customers will have ammo for guns. Now if I have to pay Retail+ and I am making the same percentage amount of profit, the prices are even higher. It sucks for all. None of my prices are that outrageous, but I will see prices are changing everyweek.

.380ACP ammo has been very hard to find. I think you will find that there are tons of Jimenez, Hi-Points out there and lots of premium .380's as well. Pretty bad when I have found 10mm cheaper than 40SW.

I'm fixing to take the guns out of the safe and put the ammo in. Joe

Funny when the ammo is worth more than the guns. I was looking at what I have and realize the cost to replace it means I won't shoot it. I certianly won't buy any guns with ammo being like it is.

Easy answer....reload!:) I've been reloading my .40 S&W ammo for 4 years now, haven't bought a single box of factory ammo in that amount of time. My cost/box = $6. Factory cost/box = $15

I'm now reloading my own .308, because at $1/round, I can't afford to shoot the thing. My reloads at 35 cents/round, make it a lot more bearable.:)

Which brings me to another ripoff, primers for $5 a hundred ($50 a thousand) yes some of the dealers are chargeing huge money for components too. I got enough and they can eat what they got for all I care.

I just did a quick search on the Internet at some of my usually buying spots for ammo.... it is ALL out of stock for most of the common calibers. Nothing! I knew that it was getting bad, but this is getting really bad. I did find some 45acp for $50 a box as well... geesh! I am glad that I have a little reserve built up.

Can someone honestly make sense of all of this? Where is the stop in the supply chain at currently? I thought that metals dropped in price.

And I did hear a rumor that the Obama administration has done something to stop the military from saving and re-using the spent casings. That the brass is being destroyed, instead of being re-loaded and sold as army surplus or whatever. Is there truth to that? Scratch that... I just read that it has been reversed.

At any rate, I am not one for saying the sky is falling, but can someone help me to understand what is going on here?

Right now shop owners around Kansas City are telling me the same thing in regards to ammo: "I can only get (insert ammo X here) when I find it!"

According to the guys at Show Me Shooters and at The Armory (in Claycomo and Kearney respectively), ammo manufacturers are BACK-LOGGED!!! Show Me Shooters is trying to push it's Brown Bear and other cheap brand ammo because it's all they can find. They're nearly out of .223/5.56 (save mil-surp, but it's the last they'll see for awhile). .308 is OUT save for Brown-Bear. 30-30 (my rifle's caliber) is down to the John Wayne special edition $30 boxes!

First guns are scarce, now ammo is drying up!

PEOPLE, STOP BUYING... WHATEVER IT IS I WANT TO BUY! :neener:

Seriously though, it will be a few more months before things return to normal in the community and dealers.

Wrong place, wrong time

I recently purchased a little .380 Bersa (my first mistake) about 2 months ago. The Bersa is in for repairs already (whole different story), but as far as I know, I'm holding on to the last 100 rounds of .380 in the Tri-State area. It's insane, I can't find any ammo anywhere. Plenty .40's, 9mms and 45's, but .380 and .38 special dried up within less than a month. Anyone know what's going on? I get different stories from everyone I talk to.

When gas prices were going out of control, people quit buying as much.... and the prices dropped dramatically. The ammo prices are going out of control and they are being priced beyond what the market will bear. People will begin to buy less, and prices will come back down.

Can you say "bubble"?....

I know that all of this will pass... and I am rationing. I am just discouraged about the situation. It is like my addiction to coca-cola... I have to have a coke each day. Supplies start to dry up and I am being told that I can't find coke now. I start going crazy because I can't have today what I once had yesterday now. I don't like that. I need my coke.

I did find an interesting article on the subject just now. This helped to settle my mind for a bit. It is a buying frenzy caused by our own fear. Read on....

Ignatius Piazza: Where Has Our Ammo Gone?

I want to thank all of you for sending me your interesting comments, videos, pictures,
and links to topics that have some relationship to gun ownership, firearms training, or
the Second Amendment.
I appreciate all of them and do my best to respond personally to you. Even if all you
receive from me is a quick thanks, please know that I am reading what you send.
This week I am addressing the issues surrounding what appears to be an ammunition
shortage in our country and providing you with my prediction of what is to come….
First, let’s put the current ammunition shortage into perspective.
What is currently happening ACROSS THE COUNTRY at every gun shop, sporting goods store, gun show, and with every Internet ammo supplier is nothing more than an ammunition buying frenzy that has surpassed the normal production capabilities of the current ammunition manufacturers and distributors.
I do not believe, as I have seen no CREDIBLE evidence, that there is a CURRENTLY a conspiracy by the Federal Government or the United Nations or anyone else to slow or stop the production and distribution of ammunition in the United States.
Just as you could walk down to your local hardware store and purchase a generator on any day of the week a few months prior to Y2K, if you tried to make a purchase two weeks before Y2K there was not a single generator in any hardware store and all of the manufacturers had sold out their production. There was no government conspiracy to prevent people from having a generator, there was just a buying demand that exceeding manufacturing and distribution capabilities.
The generator manufacturers and distributors were simply not able to keep up the demand during that generator buying frenzy in the last weeks prior to Y2K.
The same thing happened to MRE’s (military Meals Ready to Eat) and bottled water in the weeks before Y2K.
So what has caused the current ammunition buying frenzy?
The same thing that caused the Y2K frenzy. FEAR.
People are afraid the current government is conspiring to eliminate our ability to use guns to defend ourselves by drying up the ammunition supplies.
Where did the American people get this idea?
From legislation introduced in various states to require micro-stamping of bullets and cartridge cases of new ammo and the banning or confiscation of any ammo not fulfilling the requirement, in addition to the election of Barrack Obama who has a voting record of supporting such legislation.
Well, I have not jumped in on this topic (even though I receive e-mail every day asking me to spread the fear far and wide) because there is no reason to create hysteria over legislation that is introduced but has no co-sponsor, is not feasible to enact, has not reached committee for discussion, and is not widely supported by either party.
Any idiot (and there are plenty of them in the legislative branch of our government) can introduce a bill. Fortunately, it takes many checks and balances to make it a law. I do not want to participate in circulating these wild hare bills as predictable fact, which causes the frenzy you saw during Y2K and is now causing the current gun and ammunition buying frenzy.
Now don’t get me wrong… I think it is GREAT that people who never thought about getting a gun and a box of ammunition are going down to their local gun shop or sporting goods store trying to get stocked up.
And I think it is great if you are buying up as many guns and ammunition as you think you will need for the rest of your life.
(Yes, I still have a year’s supply of now outdated MRE’s and bottled water from Y2K.)
Unfortunately, America’s fear of their own government has created a gun and ammunition buying frenzy that is exceeding the current ammunition manufacturing and distribution capabilities of the ammo suppliers, which prevents thousands of people each day from purchasing their FIRST gun and box of ammunition.
My prediction is that this shortage, due to the current buying frenzy, will soon pass and you will be able to find ammo on the shelves of your local gun shops and sporting goods stores, or order cases of ammo from your favorite Internet ammo supplier.
Hang in there.

Easy answer....reload!

Got dies for .22 LR? How about .17 HMR?

Its still cheaper to buy 7.62 X 25 and 7.62 X 54.

Everything else, RELOAD!

Buying out of fear is not irrational. Look at the long standing opinions of Obama and Pelosi on gun control. It would be irrational not to stock up on stuff while you can.

+1 Lone_Gunman

I still have a year’s supply of now outdated MRE’s

Ha! They never expire the expiration date is for the Tobacco sauce. There is actually no food just substances that look like food. The only good MRE's the military ever issued were the cold weather ones, they came in a white bag. I had a buddy when I went to Panama that decided we should make extreme hot weather MRE's, they were going to come in a foil bag and have ice cream, we never perused the idea any further.

Craziest thing I saw was .380 at $60/50 for american eagle FMJ at a gunshow it St. Louis this past weekend. Don't know if people were buying it at that price, but that's what it was there for.

But I will tell you what, around me if you have a .25 auto you're doing great. It's the only handgun caliber i can consistently find

I've just resorted to shooting a lot of .22, some .38/357, and have put the .45 in mothballs for a while- can't get component bullets for it :(
