I worked at Gander Mountain for about 6 years. It was a good time, and a fun place to work, until I got a real job and a good career. Retail just isn't my career choice. Anyways... After the company went public, they got REALLY messed up. I have NO IDEA how they are able to sell ammo nowadays.

I wanted to buy a case of 7.62 NATO stamped WWB from them. They had it priced for 24.99 a box of 20!!! Cabelas sells it for 14.99 and another local retailer had it for 12.50 a box!!! They refused to match prices.

I'm still pretty close with the store MGR. We were talking, and the problem is the distributors they use. they were paying over 17.00 a box, for the same merch that cabelas and others are retailing for LESS!!! He showed me the wholesale, I can't argue him not wanting to sell something, and take a loss on it. Some one who doesnt know enough, will eventually buy it.

Having said that though, gander needs to start using different distributors for their ammo!!! I usually either buy mine online, or locally anyways. I like to keep my money local if I can...

OH yeah!! After the Gander Rant... We're starting to see lots of rifle ammo back on the shelves again. Lots of 22LR, 223, 308, 7.62x39 etc.... All the rifle calibers are back on the shelf, but the Handgun ammo still seems to be slim. I'm in Central Michigan.

Dunno where these WalMarts are with ammo on the shelves - was at one of the biggest in the area on the weekend and the shelves were bare - not even .22LR on display.

I just ordered a brick of small rifle primers online from Cabelas

Is there a hefty hazmat fee from Cabelas if you only order 1 brick of primers? I've never ordered them online.

The Dick's in Cumming, GA had three or four boxes of .22LR (525pk Golden Bullets) and plenty of .44mag. One box of .45ACP period. It was Winchester PDX1. That was about it. I think there was a little .22mag on the shelf, but only a few 50 round boxes.

I bought the .45 and one box of .22lr and left the rest, even though I would have liked to stock up on the .44mag. I figured there wasn't much left, so I left a little bit for the next guy. This was on Sunday the 31st.

I haven't been to wally world around here lately, so I don't know what the prices and availability here are.

Cabela's charges 20 bucks for the haz fee regardless if you order 1 brick or 100 bricks.

On the weekly Wal-Mart trip, I got quite a surprise. They had their shelves stocked with about 40-50 50 round boxes of Blazer Brass in .40 S&W. Everything else is still bare, though.

how are ammo sales lately

So I was getting so frustrated with ammo prices and the “nuts” at the gun shop so I took about 3 months off from shooting etc. So now I took the 22LR out to the range to shoot today and was wondering, Did the lack of ammo craze slow down at all?

Thanks

Bob

Generally, it's still a seller's market, but it depends on location. Some reports are that shelves are starting to see more product for a longer period. In other places, it's the same situation as it's been since the election.

more supply here in FL but I think that is due to the box limit at most stores now. Still see runs on certain types though. But there were a lot of .223 at walmart the other day.

So it might have calmed down a bit, but for the most part people are still waiting for the Bamster to ban guns..... I guess I'll go back to my non shooting shelll for another couple of months..

Walmart in So Cal I visit has ton's of 223 and most centerfire. Sometimes 9mm, usually 40 and .25 for pistols.

380 ammo.

I was in the Wally world in Millington TN last night at 10. They had 15 or 20 boxes of Remington 380. Tons of WWB 9mm, 40, 45, 38 spcl. Had only a couple of Blazer Brass in 45 and 1 in 9. Of course they had 357 Sig. Only thing that they didn't have in any of was 357 mag. I usually try to buy one box of something every week. If lucky I have 2 different calibers to choose from. Last night I just stood there and looked at it trying to figure out the 6 I needed most.

Supplies seem to be improving. I spoke with a man at the range yesterday who said a small hole in the wall gunshop about 40 minutes away had 30 boxes of 380 on the shelf because nobody knew he had it. Didn't think to ask the price.

Today's paper had a Gander Mtn insert advertising Winchester 333 round packs of 22s (reducing size to make the price LOOK better?) at $14.99. I was in GM about 2 weeks ago and they had no 22 bricks on the shelf. Maybe this ad means they now are getting some. That price is about $24 per full 10 pack which is still high but better that what has been seen recently.

I think the situation will calm down over the next few weeks as the hoarders get their fill and the ammo makers catch up.

Now let's talk about why crude oil prices keep going up dramatically when production is up, reserves are up and demand is down. Talk about skewed economic theories.

Wal-mart in Eastern Iowa

had boxes of 9mm WWB 100rds, and some 44 mag, some 38 special, and several boxes of Fed bulk pack .22 LR for $13.47 per. Ammo is coming back. Don't pay the gouge prices at gun shows and Gander Mountain. Give Wal-Mart, Cabelas, Scheels, Bass Pro, and others a chance first as Gander Mountain is out of sight. Was selling Remington .22 bulk packs for $25 when I have seen them for $17 recently.

Snitch out resellers of wally ammo?

My local Wallys in Southern Illinois has quite a bit of ammo, including WWB 100 rd value pack .45 for $31.95, Federal 9mm for $9.47/bx, and even a WWB value pack of 100 .380 for $33.95.

Now, the boxes have a label saying if you see this box being resold at another business, call 1-800-walmart. I'm thinking, heck, just peel the sticker off, how tough would that be to get around the resale police? And is it illegal to resell wally ammo at a higher rate, if so, maybe all those free market knights aren't as holy?

lettering on label hard to see in photo

One way I am beating ammo shortage

is that I am going back to .22 shooting more. I had let myself forget how much fun it is. I splurged and bought a CZ Kadet and love it. I also found a neat Model 60 Marlin at a gunshow for $85 in great shape and found I love to punch paper with .22 rifles. .22 LR of all kinds seems to be pretty readily available here without paying gouge prices at gun shows and Gander Mt. I am in Eastern Iowa.
