Check with the cashier at the ammo counter at Wally World and see what day their shipments usually come in...it's different at different stores. My local store put out about 40 boxes of WWB Wednesday night/Thursday morning. I bought 5 boxes and told a friend about it. He went there and the morning shift guy with the key to the cabinet had gone home and forgot to leave the key. They could not reach him on the phone, so everyone who went there could only "look" at the ammo Thursday afternoon.

Still hard to fine but seems to be coming in more frequently, I have yet to pay anything above retail

The panic buying does seem to be slowing down some. Maybe some the hoarders have built up enough of a stockpile.
It's still gonna be a while until ammo become readily available and it doesn't look like the prices are gonna go down to what they were a year ago, but the will go down in general.

I finally ran out of Hoppes #9, so I decided to frequent my local gun store to pick some up and see whats happening in the gun and ammo world.

They had no 9mm in stock.

20 rds of 762x39 was $10.99 :)eek:). They had ~20, 1K round boxes, so I asked what kind of discount they would give if I bought a case. The guy didnt want to bargin, but reluctantly said he would "cut me a deal" for 9.99 per 20 rds (~$500 per/K).....:what:

So I walked over to the cleaning section and picked up a 5oz bottle of Hoppes #9. Price tag was $8.99 :)fire::fire::cuss:).

Normally I dont shop walmart. I decided to give 'em a chance. No ammo AT ALL except for some .25 and 12G rounds ($20 and change per 100..seemed pretty fair). 5oz bottle of Hoppes was $2.97 :))). That was my only purchase, but I was happy.

What I learned today:
1) The ammo situation REALLY is out of hand at local stores.
2) As much as I hate walmart, they WILL get a (very) small portion of my business.

Just came back from the Indy 1500, and while the panic may have died down somewhat, prices continue to rise. They had .380 there, but at $40+ a box. Same with .38 and .45's. There were a couple deals to be had (deals, compared to post-election prices, anyway), though, something which was an impossibility three months ago.

Also heard about someone selling $399 AK's, although I didn't see it myself.

With all the ammo companies ramped up to full capacity 24/7/365, it won't be long before the market is flooded with supply. This demand level is unsustainable and when the demand drops off, even moderately, the shelves will be loaded with everything. I'm predicting that by September or October, there will be primers, ammo, powder out the wazoo.:) With the decreased demand and the stuff sitting on the shelves, expect good prices too, like $20/brick for primers.:) I may be an optimist, but I see this happening.

Supply and demand are about to do an X, supply ramped up, declining demand = flooded market.:)

I've been pretty lucky in finding ammo this past week at Walmart. It's been the same here in San Diego as it is across the US. :(

demand is only declining in relation to the price and is controled by the limited suppy.

if the price where to drop(I.E more supply), demand will escalate.

all those new guns will stay hungry for some time.

I don't remember Wal-mart selling 200 rounds of .223 for 50.00 the last couple years.

Well, it wasn't quite as low as $50 but about two years ago, Wal-Mart sold 200 round Federal Value Packs of .223 for $57.88. I picked up a couple of bricks that are still in my gun room.

Thanks for the tip.

My mom was at Wallyworld in a different town this morning getting her battery checked, and looked for me. They had 2 boxes of 9mm for 21/box, but there wasn't anyone around to help her. Unfortunately from the distance she couldn't see well enough to read the finer print and tell me what they were other than 9mm.

Has anyone given thought to what is going to happen to the ammo companies and their employees when the buying panic finally subsides?

Will their sales plummet putting people out of work?

Yep, I posted somewhere on this very forum about that earlier. Problem is I can't find it to link you to it. Anyway, the gist was that as a business owner one of your most controllable costs is labor so when you're income goes down for any reason you almost nearly wind up laying off people. So the guys working the lines in these ammo companies will be the first to pay the price.

If the companies have over leveraged for equipment then the banks (read - taxpayers - since we're bailing out banks) will get stung too, but not until long after the workers are on unemployment.

Is the scare finally coming to a halt?

I ventured into Wal-Mart last night to find something I haven't seen in a few months. AMMO!!!! They also had a FULL RACK of rifles and shotguns!!!

Although I'm almost strictly looking for .22lr, they had Federal 100 and 200 round packs of .223 ammo, .357 Magnum, 9mm, .38 Special, and loads of 12 gauge.

The .223 stuff is high, $40 per 100 of the Federal stuff, but my guess is that they're boxer primed (which is always good for future use). Price comes out to around $8-$9 a box of .223.

Looks as though the boats have docked in a few places. Still need one or two 550 .22lr bulk packs for the summer.

For quite a while I haven't seen too many ARs come through. The past few weeks I've transferred several (some with priced receipts, and the prices aren't ridiculous) and I getting a lot of phone calls from distributors about what they have in stock, so things must be settling down a bit.

While on vacation I checked all the local Walmarts for ammo. One of the 3 I stopped at had 3 boxes of .45 and 9 boxes of 9mm. Could only buy 6 boxes so got 3 and 3. They were out the next day.

I buy all the .45, 9mm, and .22LR I can get. We use the 22 to plink and have started to teach my daughters to shot. They love the single shot pink .22 rifle we purchased from Dicks for them.

Well, it finally happened in my neck of the woods. Wal-mart shelves are bare except for some .22 and plenty of shotgun shells.

The gunshops either have much of nothing or outrageous pricing.

I have had good luck with midway having what I needed, but I'm an oddball shooter, as in my needs are .454 casull and 45 long colt for the most part.

I've been stocking up all year at gun shows (7 shows so far) though, and I'm not hurting for anything in the way of ammo.

I started in January by buying an empty 50 cal military ammo can and filling it to the rim with .223 - I repeated this process at each successive show with a different category of ammo until I felt like I had enough spare ammo stocked up.

I still look to see if walmart or academy have anything, but I'm way beyond freakin out if I don't find any ammo available.

OK people - you can stop now!

Will the one or two people hording all the primers please stop - you already have enough!

I live in the eastern PA area, Montgomery county actually - and I have been unable to find large pistol primers for the last several months. It's OK to cease buying now and let the manufacturers catch up (I can imagine the price once they get back into stock!). I have brass so that's ok. I cast my own for most of my calibers - so that's ok too. I have plenty of powder - that's ok. I have lots of rifle bullets - so that's ok too. I NEED PRIMERS!:banghead::banghead::banghead:

ok ok calm down sir, you'll be ok ,just take a deep breath ,the primer's will be out when there out ;)

Just a small update - went to the local Walmart and they had 1 box of Winchester .45. Everything else was gone. I didn't even see 7mm or .357 ammo which I normally see a few boxes on the shelf.

Report on IA, IL, MI, IN

Before I report, I want to ask people who have not listed their general location to do so when they talk about ammo/primers availability. Without having your general location not much can be determined about patterns.

I live in Iowa and took a trip to Michigan to shoot with my nephew....In general....bulk packs of either Federal or Remington gold plate hollow points were pretty darn available at the Wal-Marts I stopped at on the way. The Remington were 16.97 plus tax and the Federal 14.47 plus tax. I also saw 40SW for 12.97 a box in IL, limit 3, and saw some other calibers such as a little .38 special, one Remington .44 Mag for around $34 and a little other hand gun ammo at Wal-Marts.

I stopped at a big Cabela's and big Bass Pro Shop in Indiana along the freeways, and big Gander Mountain (Flint Michigan)and one smaller Gander Mountain in Iowa. Now I know why a lot of you have talked about Gander Mountain gouging. Gander was selling large caliber hand gun ammo for 49.99 a box of 50 (Winchester, Magtech, etc. in 45 Colt, 44-40, 44 Special.) Cabelas had some of the same stuff selling it for $30. Bass Pro was higher than Cabela's but significantly less than Gouge Mountain. Both Gouge Mountain locations had the same high ammo prices.

I did not find any pistol primers at any of the locations. I am planning on boycotting Gouge Mountain in the future.

I just ordered a brick of small rifle primers online from Cabelas... supposedly only a 2-3 week backorder... we'll see though...
