Ammo shrinkflation

I wonder if we will get back to the days where you could go into a gun shop/hardware store/general store and buy ammo by the round.

Have to ask bud, when was this? I've been in the ammo buying business for a little over a couple of decades. I did not experience this. Maybe it was regional? Not denying what you're saying, just really curious. I only recently learned that smokers can buy cigarettes by the single, for what must be the same reason as what you're describing. Very interesting thing for sure, and one would expect, a last resort as well.

One thing I notice is suppliers are selling a lot of crap ammo, at insane-o hoarder prices. Warehouses and retailers seem to be pushing out their old, unpopular stock, first. I see a lot of lead nosed 22LR, steel cased ammo, and
Blazer brass, going for top dollar, to the people who deserve it most, those folks who won't stop buying ammo long enough to let the prices settle.

I just got 25 boxes (of 20 rounds) same lot of 6mm ARC, I'm happy. It will be shot, not hoarding.) Match grade, Hornady, has never been cheap, at least now it's available.

Got my 6.5 Creedmoor ~ a month go. Time to empty out some brass.

I've noticed that 25 round boxes of Critical Defense are now 20 round boxes.

And the old 32 oz bottles of Gatorade have been replaced with fancy new 28 oz bottles

Two weeks ago, as part of a supply update, I purchased some .38 +P Critical Defense (online) and yes, the box contained 20 rounds. It went on a shelf in the safe next to to boxes of of defensive .357 Mag of both Federal and Cor-Bon purchased prior to 2008, also 20 round boxes.

Then there is a 20 round box of .30-30 I had forgotten for a commemorative Mdl '94 Centennial '66 stolen about 2000 which was purchased in 1966. The Centennial '66 is a whole 'nutha story, but a good/sad one, some other time, though. Those .30-30 cartridges was bought by my Dad, likely also in 1966.

My point, obviously is, ammo has been in 20 round boxes, as well as the typical 50 round boxes for a really long time. Oh, I almost forgot two boxes of Remington (Green Box) .40 S & W, also 20 round boxes.

The ammo update was the result of buying same lot cases of premium target ammo for recent additions, 6 ARC and 6.5 Creedmoor. 500 rounds of 6 ARC consists of two cases of 20 boxes of 20 cartridges plus 5 individual boxes of 20 cartridges. I found it available at what, for me, was a very good price.

Also in the order was an 8 oz can of Kroil and a 200ml (6.8 oz) bottle of Sweets 7.62. The 6.8 ounces throws me off, but the 200ml makes sense. I can't recall it it previously was larger such as 250ml or 8 oz.

Groceries are the worst offenders that are easy to spot. cans of tomato sauce, veggies and other assorted canned goods - used to be 16 oz, now 14.5 is the standard. Saw another bit about a bag of Doritos. the "family size" now, is still 1 oz smaller than the regular size from just a few years ago.

My point was that Hornady used to sell Critical Defense 380 ACP in 25 round boxes. I recently threw out an old empty 25 round box.

Yep.

What frustrates me is how naive people are that they don’t even see it. “There’s no inflation. I still pay $2 for a block of cheese” all the while failing to realize that the block of cheese is 12oz whereas it was 16oz a year ago.

To be fair, it’s not like anyone could have predicted that printing a bunch of extra money and shoveling it into the economy over a short period of time combined with unprecedented government spending over the past year would cause inflation or some sort of economic disturbance.

Do you think that might be why crypto currency is gaining a foothold in the US? It wouldn't surprise me if someone had the bright idea of starting an ammo manufacturing business and selling it using crypto. Crypto is extremely volatile but so is ammo prices and some people use ammo and components as a hedge against inflation. I have this sinking feeling that we may be a long way from the ammo prices of just a few years ago.

Good point, I cant recall a brick of .22 being anything other than 1000 rounds (at least 500).

Same as foods. Portions go down prices go up.

Speaking of ammo prices, local gun shops are still a good bit more expensive than online, but at least there is always ammo on the shelves now

That’s an interesting point. I’m not sure how much crypto currency has to do with inflation and ammo. Maybe there is something there, but I suspect people gravitate towards cryptocurrency as an investment and/or to escape the government’s regulation of currency and taxation.

It's crazy, with the prices of everything going up considerably, not just on ammo but literally everything, I continue to be grateful for my LGS and the fact that amidst all the craziness and shortages, somehow he manages to source out a decent supply of ammo and guns and sell them at a decent price.

This is the cheapest I have seen a case of 9mm in a couple years..... not to mention I've noticed that certain shotguns (500's, 590's, 870's) have become very hard to find and are quite expensive, but i grabbed a 590 off him for $250 last week. He has had some great deals lately.... IMG_20220201_202728.jpg

I used to be 6' now 5' 10"

Gravity sucks when you get old. Ask me how I know. ;)

Degenerative disc disease (or syndrome) has forced me to have fusion done in the Lumbar of my spine. Doing energetic PT hoping to put off for a while longer doing same to my mid-back and neck.

I was 6' 1" when I graduated college, now at the tender age of 68 I'm 5' 11", or at least I was prior to the spine fusion, I may actually be back to 6' 0".

Growing old is not for the faint of heart.
