ammo stash?

I always keep at least a couple thousand 22lr, for center-fires realistically I have only been able to afford components for around 3k rounds for all my various cal's combined. At any given time I usually have around 1k rounds loaded, though not in any specific calibers. I plan on getting more at some point though.

I think the smartest thing to keep aside from 22lr is shotgun rounds.- Some bird shot, heavy goose or turkey loads, and some 00 or 000 buck. one thing this world will probably never run out of is birds, if they are all gone, likely so are we.

If Zombies Attack. I am picking up and going deep to public land. I am taking all my Black powder, Bow, caps and lead. Everything I need is in a Tote. Shoot Straight Boys, because I am going deer hunting.

I buy a box of 9, 45 or 380 whenever I see it on sale at wally world, I will stop when I have a half case of all my calibers, like 4, for a total of 2,000 rounds of pistol ammo, will be the number. I have 2- 9's a 38, a 45, and a 380. The 45 would be my main gun other than a rifle, with a 9 as backup with hi-cap mags for both. A long gun would probablly be in 223, as it is as mentioned a weight issue, the 223 is big enough for most jobs, although I would rather make it a 308, it's just too heavy with ammo. To cut and run, if you have to at my age. I do like those saiga shotguns with the 15 round mags, or the new kel-tek 24 round pump, but those things weigh a ton when you add all the other stuff and ammo. Most of us are long past our soldiering days, and if it's a stationary situation thats another story. Maybe, burying a few weapons and ammo, in poly tubes under ground, as backup if needed. If something bad goes down it would be nice to have a stash someware so if the govt or some other force, did try to disarm us by suprise in a certain area, you could re supply yourself after the initial sxxxstorm.

At least a full combat load for all rifles (i.e., how much you can carry on your person with your web gear and mag pouches). A reserve of one or two thousand rounds is nice, but like others have said, it is tough to transport. I do it mainly as a hedge against increasing ammo prices.

As for the possibility of a ban, seizure, martial law, etc., I like to keep my battle rifles in the same calibers as those who are likely to be enforcing such things.

I'm talking TEOTWAWKI and the ammo stored at the place that you will be holed up at so to speak.
I don't bother with TEOTWAWKI planning for these reasons:

  • If there are enough zombies to justify 1000's of rounds...they'll come at me in great numbers and from more directions than I can keep up while firing and reloading. Game over.
  • If the government comes after me, once I return fire they'll just call in artillery. Game over.
  • If the _____ invaders come, there will be more of them than me. I don't live in a bunker and I like having lots of windows in my home, so I can't withstand much suppressive fire. Game over.
  • I may not even be at home at the time of TEOTW, and making it back to my house may not be possible.
  • If civilization crumbles, water, food and medicine will make more sense to stockpile. My son has allergies and asthma, so without the corner drug store I'm toast sooner or later.
So yeah, same answer as before. Around 1000 for each caliber (mainly because I buy in bulk and I like to have enough on hand to shoot when I want, even if it's a bad week and I'm broke!). That should also get me through any short term disasters if needed, and assuming one of the things mentioned above don't happen. Long term, I can't manufacture or stockpile enough medicine (due to expiration dates) for my family to survive. If they don't survive, I really don't care if I do.

But to each his own! ;) Those are just the reasons that I don't plan for TEOTWAWKI.

Heck, I just buy it when it's cheap and stack it deep. I never buy less than a case. Even if I don't shoot it, it's been holding its value better than my retirement account.

ForumSurfer; Good points! My reply was already long so I didn't want to go into it but there are a LOT of other much more likely scenarios than Armageddon. While I do keep a good reserve of ammo handy, I wouldn't go spent money preparing for the end of the world. B&Es, car theft, fires, hurricanes, flooding, gasoline shortages, major snow storms and long periods without power are all much more likely and can be even deadlier. A prudent person would be much better off putting in things like a wood stove, a GOOD alarm system, CCTV surveillance, reinforcing their roof, GOOD fire extinguishers, an anti-fire water sprinkler system, a generator and plenty of fuel, stocking up on food and water, etc instead of hoarding huge amounts of ammo and guns. OTOH just remember that with guns and ammo you can get all the others!

The number of available rounds isn't something I obsess over. I simply buy 3, shoot 2 and save 1.

ForumSurfer:

You are one of the few people who mentions the need for medications being more important than ammo.
My wife developed Type 1 diabetes (normally it is 'child-onset') when we were engaged, about 16 years ago and manages very well, even better with the insulin pump.

Along with ammo, it is baffling when people become over-analytical about needing only home defense weapons for uncivil insurrections etc, but not many see the need for pharmaceuticals, food and water (interstate trucking, fuel, electrical systems). Just another Arab Oil Embargo as in '73 could be unpleasant.

When the riots first broke out in Cairo, it dawned on me that many people there will probably starve fairly soon, unless all city areas have a transport system etc, control of looting, never mind pharmaceuticals.

Forumsurfer and Joe in Fla. Great points. Lots of things I could add but this isn't the site for it. I was just wondering about peoples thoughts on the ammo part. Seems like for the most part though most of yall keep a lot on hand or the supplies to load them. I'm wanting to get into loading , just haven't pulled the trigger yet.

These are a start. I've got enough primers, powder, bullets, and cases to load about 10k more. These are more for future shortages and price hikes. I've got about 800# of lead. Looking to get maybe 2,000# more. I expect that lead ammo will be banned. Copper has hit $5 a pound. Wheat, corn, rice, cotton, coffee, gold, silver are all at historic highs.

Now, if you're thinking you need 10k rounds for some "end of the world" deal, you're an idiot. If you ever need that much ammo, you're long dead anyway.

You'd better worry more about the stuff you use every day. You know, trivial stuff like food and water. Meds. Transportation. Communication.

To answer the OP's question:
3,000 rds. surplus .303, because it was vanishing in spring '09.
3,000 " " 8mm Mauser.
3,000 " new 7.62x39.
Most of this was bought as a protection against inflation/scarcity and the next scalper-induced panic.
It will happen again, as it did in '08-early '09 (the scalpers know their sheep).

The reason I refuse to take any form of addictive pain medications, for my auto-related injuries, is due to the what happens if they become unavailable? I would rather live with a moderate amount of daily pain taking over-the-county Tylenol tablets, than slight pain taking Oxycontin. There are, however, meds that one cannot live without...blood pressure, diabetes, asthma inhalers, etc. Great catch in the thread!

I heard Ted Nugent say in an interview once on Cam & Co. that he buys his ammo by the pallet.

Out of the stashing of beans, bullets, and bandaids, bullets is all that relates to this site. You guys check out survivalblog.com for the other stuff.

I'm surprised this thread is still ongoing.......most of the time the mods shut down these TEOTWAWKI threads quite quickly.

With good reason I might add.

I stock my ammo like I stock my toothpaste, canned goods, and generally any other consumables around the house. When I go to shoot, I try to pick up a couple of boxes. I bring home what's left and slowly it piles up. When I can't afford ammo for a sudden range trip, I've got some on hand.

I started stockpiling my other goods not for any kind of survival reason, but because I work offshore and I don't always have time to shop before I resupply my bag between rig trips.

One of these days I need to buy some rifle ammo. I don't even know what TAEKAcaca or whatever is. Doomsday? I got better things to worry about.

Short term problems, I'm covered. I can put food on the table and protect myself just fine. Bet the farm on that!

Now in the REAL world, I don't get too carried away. 500-1000 rds of each handgun caliber. I always have a brick of .22. Since I shoot a lot of shotgun, about 3-4000 rds when things get slow.
