Now that I have the gun purchase out of the way, what ammo do you guys like for carry and for practice in .45? I bought some gold dots for carry, but the guy behind the counter sold me GAP instead of auto, and I bought some Remingtons for practice. Other than Remington what do you recommend for practice?

What kind of .45acp chambered handgun will you be using this ammo in? What length barrel?

I'm probably going to stick with DPX, I like it in 9mm, what's not to like in .45.

I'd say the 230gr Federal hydra shok woukld be fine for most uses. As for the practice rounds I'll let others chime in.

I practice with what I carry:

Caliber: .45 ACP
Bullet: Lyman 225 gr. #452374 (cast)
Powder: Unique 7.0 gr.
Case: any
Primer: CCI 300
OAL: 1.272"
Velocity: 900 fps.
Firearm: 1911 variant

any of the premium SD ammo will work I usually try to find which ever is cheaper. right now in 45 www.ammunitiontogo.com has FED HSTs and remmi Golden Sabers pretty cheap. I use the 230 HSTs in my 4 and 5" guns and either remmi 185GS or the taurus 185 barns ammo in my 3".

Hornady 230 grain JHP/XTP+P or Same in Hornady TAP for carry with equivalent FMJ reloads for practice.

I know Gold Dots, HST, Ranger, etc. are perhaps a bit stronger, but for some reason just have a higher trust factor with Hornady's reliability.

Do you have to rub it in to those of us that are paying "up the nose" for our ammo!:banghead:
My .45's have been seeing less & less action on the range....:(

+1 to Okiecruffler...If something doesn't change soon there'll be a whole lot of people with out-of-ballance tires around here!!!

before i carry any ammo i test it extensivly in my handgun that i am gonna carry it in, i like hornady tap, hydra shoks, gold dots, golden sabers, winchester ranger. there are many great opions out there and i would start there. look for reliability 1st and foremost, then shootability, and accuracy last.

as far as training and shooting at the range, umc, wwb, blaser brass, american eagle, ultramax lead, and others do great. what ever i can find with the best price tag.

My carry ammo is Hornad 230gr XTP Loaded on a single stage so I know everything is exact.

My practice is what every was on sale last month. Mostly Lasercast 200gr LSWC cause I can just walk in the door and by them direct a lot cheaper.

I do pick up a box or 2 of the XTP's when they are on sale to load and practice with but mostly lead.

I kinda like the 230 Federal Hydra Shock. I doubt that its any bettter, or much worse than most. It does have a history of reliability in my mags and my pistols.

The HS plays nice with the aluminum feed ramp on the Commanders and still manages to get up to about 850 fps w/o getting into Plus P pressure.

I'm fooling around a little with other stuff like HST or SXT for the steel frame pistols. I don't know how thats going to work out yet. We'll see.

"I bought some gold dots for carry, but the guy behind the counter sold me GAP instead of auto,..."

That's about the only way they can get rid of that stuff...

I have bought Hornady TAP and Winchester Ranger T ammo for carry lately. There are lots of options and I am sure they will get the job done. My suggestion is to buy two boxes. Fire off one box to confirm it works reliably and you hit your target. It will normally be loaded hotter with more recoil. Then fire off what is in your magazine when you go to the range occasionally to keep cycling in fresh SD ammo.

I practice with FMJ ammo. Practice SD ammo if you can afford it, but that is overrated to me.

I practice with homebrews, 230gr TMJ or JHP over 5.3 of Win 231. I carry a .40 so I guess that doesn't count. :)
