I know that it is a crime to bring a gun into a school pretty much everywhere. Most jurisdictions however do allow the owner to leave the gun in their car, even if the car is on school property. My question is, what are the laws about having ammunition and/or magazines inside the school on your person, specifically Michigan law? I teach a high school drumline, and as such, I visit various schools often. I leave my weapon in my car, but I am thinking about taking the magazines with me, so that if the gun gets stolen out of the car, the thief would have to go through some extra trouble of finding a mag to make it work. Is this idea legal? What about for other victim zones...I mean "gun free zones", like banks and such?

Not sure about illegal, but whenever drug-dogs sweep my little 1-A school, there's always one or two kids with a spare 30-06 or .270 round in their trucks left over from hunting season. Of course, when the dogs tag that truck, they search it and find tobacco products, a large skinning knife, etc etc, and take them up.

Not sure about illegal, but they set off drug dogs and the admins treat the rounds as a threat.

I had a box of .22 in the little garage door opener compartment (easily visible from outside) for two or three years in high school, and the only thing I got in trouble for was an ax in the back of my pickup that I'd used to chop ice off of cow tanks on the way to school that morning. Had a box of .22 break in my coat pocket one day in science class, so about a dozen bullets came rattling out on the floor, but it wasn't any big deal as the only people around me probably had them too. I also had a rifle to put those bullets in behind the seat, so I'm probably glad they never opened it up, of course it wouldn't have been to hard as I left it unlocked with the keys in it most of the time and had a lockout set in the toolbox...

I'm actually curious about a similar topic - magazine on a university campus.

I presume I have to take it in pieces. I need to send it back to Glock, and my University has a post-office on campus. Was wondering if I took it apart, if I could mail it from there, or if that would be a no-no.

Well trainwreck, I'm not sure where you live or how old you are, but I'm willing to bet you went to school a long time ago, and not in Michigan. Here and now, if a student had a live round in his pocket during class, they would probably close the school and call SWAT, HAZMAT, and EOD to deal with it.

I'm 23, so I graduated a while ago, but I do go to high schools at night to teach after school music programs. So causing a huge scene is not much of a concern as the actual laws and possibility of losing my CCW for an infraction.

There is no blanket answer to these questions since the laws vary greatly from state to state. For example, it is legal in Utah for a CFP holder to have ammo, magazines, and handguns in any public school, including universities. In many other states, that's an expedited ride to the graybar hotel.

Taurusowner: I'm 19...just a small town southern school where we all know each other...that includes the administrators (or lack thereof in our case) However, I'd probably have to recommend that the mags don't go with you, and as a matter of fact, I wonder about your even having the gun in your vehicle on campus...as I said, I never had any problems with the drug dog, but 50 .22 rounds in a box and a (semi-clean) rifle in a case behind the seat probably doesn't produce nearly as much scent as a loaded magazine and a rifle that has been shot recently. I know it is illegal here to have the gun in your vehicle, but, as with anything, it's only breakin' the law if you get caught...

Drug dog sets off on Ammo please tell where so all the dogs drug cases can get tossed as that dog is not hitting on drugs. Shows me no probable cause for search as the dog has been trained for other than drugs. Ammo alone is not contraband.

Sorry, don't know about Michigan laws. In PA, you cannot have a gun and/or ammo (not even a .22 bullet) on school property whether it is in you car or not. As a teacher, it would be a fast track way to unemployment. Now, when I first started teaching I actually had a deer rifle delivered to the office their. The principal, an avid deer hunter, and I inspected and admired the rifle before I took it home. Today, we would both be on the wrong end of a swat team surge!

Im just 24 now, and in my highschool and even middle school days, having live ammo was a big no no. Could either be, depending on the school and if your a student their a week out of school or complete kicking out of that school system.

But an adult going in with a loaded magazine, if some hyper- nervous nelly saw it, well dont be surprised if you wind up on the floor with a 300 pound sherriffs deputy shoving a gun in your head while your teeth are smashed out on the floor.

oh, bugger.

I keep my steel targets in my trunk all year round. often they are accompanied by a small ammo can with a few handfuls of 7.62x54r inside.

I need to remember to take it out. don't know for sure, but it's probably very illegal here in CA.

The only way to know is to find out what the policies are in your district.

If you are in a "No Tolerance" school zone, then I would expect enforcement to be exactly that.

No Tolerance rules have resulted in expulsion for a kid who brought aspirin to class and gave it to another kid.

I don't think that a school would give you any leeway if finding loaded magazines on you inside a school zone.

Bear in mind - individual school policies apply too.

At my University, you can't have anything on campus (including stashed in your car). That includes any type of knife, pepper spray, firearm, etc.

Legally, I'm not sure how the law treats cars here in Florida on school property. All I know is if I get caught, I'm gone, so I don't risk it.

The whole "no weapon at all" policy at schools is baloney. Due to it, I cannot be armed at all any day that I have school - including having anything in my car. So I'm a walking target on my way to my car at 6AM and back from my car at 10PM (yes I have very long days).

Gets me mad. :fire:
