An Elk Gun

Interesting rifles...

...are rifles that shoot and group well. Good luck on finding one.

BTW Academy Sporting Goods has Remington 700's on sale for $350
ADL black synthetic stock. 243, 270, 30-06 and 7 mag...to me, that's interesting!

I've been watching this forum for long enough to figure that I'd probably take some ribbing for the "interesting" comment. But you have a valid point dougw47, function comes first.

The Merkel is a fine idea, but I think they are just a little over my budget. I don't mind a good caliber debate. I'm actually working on creating an algorithm to describe the phenomenon of the way that if any thread in Rifle Country goes on long enough, the probability of a caliber debate occurring must approach 1. Well, not really, but someone probably could.

Is there really not anyone who uses a Sako 85? Seems like a nice rifle at a pretty good price.

My elk rifles, for walking about in high altitude:

Tikka T3 stainless synthetic .300wm
Tikka T3 stainless synthetic .270win
Rem 700 "cabela's mountain guide" .308win
Vanguard stainless synthetic (ulrtalight stock) .300wby

I don't seem to ever hunt elk in good weather, so they all look like they spend their days dunked in a creek multiple times over.

Win 7mm mag. I have dropped elk at 3/4 to 1 mile (probably lucky shot). I have never had to chase one either.

I haven't been on here in a few days so I read back through the first page on this. It seems Carlos Hathcock has risen from the dead and taken up elk hunting.

I elk hunt eastern oregon quite a bit and have been to Idaho for a guided hunt once and if over a dozen elk in the freezer has tought me a few things. One is that a 30-06 will kill the hell out of elk at the ranges I shoot elk at ie longest shot was 340 yards laser ranged after the shot. I started packing a M77 all weather 300wm and its a great elk rifle, I shoot them and they die. But it is heavy to pack when the hills get steep. My next elk rifle will be LIGHT and prob not a mag. Maybe 300wm but most likely be a light 30-06 or maybe a weatherby ultralight 338-06 cause I think it would be a sweet elk gun.

Kimber is looking pretty nice and in 06 or 300wsm would be a good looking and good working elk gun.
