An 'In General' Question

Generally speaking, regarding turret or progressive presses - if you had 2 presses of the same make and model would the turret or top plate be interchangeable between both. Let me see if I can make that easier to understand, if you set up a turret or top plate on press 'A' could you then put it on press 'B' (same make and model) without having to adjust any of the dies?

A more specific question - I have a Lee turret press. It's the 'Deluxe 4 Hole' cheaper press. If I bought a Lee Classic Cast turret press, a better press, could I swap the turrets between those two without major adjustments to the dies?

Without MAJOR changes, yes, but it's unlikely without some tweaking. Presses aren't all that precisely made. Don't need to be, they're not like rocket parts you know.

As for the deluxe to the classic turret, probably not. The classic turret is taller, and has a much different linkage system. For the same-same turret, if the linkage and ram were all made the same day, I'd say yes.

IMO, you will need some minor tweaking. For example, it is unlikely that both turret setups--the tolerances in the die press head and turret and the LOA and indexing tweak with the top nut--combined with the point about the general press precision does suggest that minor adjustments would be needed for any of the die stations.

If you do this, try building new dummy rounds first, to sort out just how the two presses differ.

As far as the Dillon presses go, the answer is yes.

I didn't know how tight the tolerances were from one press to the other. The only experience I have is just going back and forth between the turrets that have been setup on my little deluxe turret press and so far they haven't needed any tweaking.

The tolerances are quite loose between presses. Unless you got lucky and they are from the same lot they might be close. Tried to switch a 357 die head from another Dillon 550 to mine. Was like loading 38 spl they were loading that short. Had to back everything out several turns. You could, I assume, machine them to take out any differences and make them the same dimensions, ie skim cut the top of the rams so they have the exact same dimension at the end of the stroke between the ram head and the die plate. But that is assuming that there is escess material somewhere in the design and you have the machine to do the altering.
