I went hiking with my wife and three kids today at a county park. Typically when I go out I do carry either my M&P 9mm or my S&W revolver. Well the last time we went to this park I notice a sign that prohibited firearms and I went back to the truck and put my M&P in the center console. My wife likes this park because its about a 2.5 mile trail hike along the creek. Well we completed most of the hike and were on our way out when we happened upon a boar hog. Well not happened but suprised a boar hog and it suprised us. It charged directly at my 11 year old daughter. I pulled her out of the way and shouted very loudly at the boar hog (about 160-180 lbs would be my estimate, I do hunt them quite a bit). When I shouted the boar hog diverted its path away from us and ran away in the bush. Now I highly doubt that I would have pulled my gun based on the charge...In fact I'm sure I wouldn't because it happened so fast and I was to concerned with getting my daughter away behind me. My only concern is what would have happened if it would not have diverted its path and I didn't even have a pocket knife. More than likely a few stitches and no harm, but it sure would have been nice to have that M&P just in case of other 2 or 4 legged beasts.

You should've taken the hog to the sign and have him read it. Then he would've known how unsportsmanlike his behavior was.

I have a hard time placing my trust in any sign put there by some nay-bob idiot.

I hope your vehicle wasn't broken into and had your gun stolen while you were hiking.

I went back to the truck and put my M&P in the center console.

You do that in Seattle and you will have it stolen.
I never put anything in the car after I park.
If I need to store something I will leave the area, store it and then return to park or store it before I get to the parking lot.
If it had been me I would have carried.
Sign what sign?

It's moments like these that remind me of Dr. Suzanna Gratia Hupp.

What state are you in? In Washington State that sign is null, void and meaningless because of state preemption. Many states have preemption and I am sure there are counties, like there are here in Washington, that choose to post their parks illegally anyway. It is for the childrens' sake, after all.

It appears on the surface and after a little investigation that the prohibition by the county is in conflict with Florida Statue:

790.33 Field of regulation of firearms and ammunition preempted.--

(1) PREEMPTION.--Except as expressly provided by general law, the Legislature hereby declares that it is occupying the whole field of regulation of firearms and ammunition, including the purchase, sale, transfer, taxation, manufacture, ownership, possession, and transportation thereof, to the exclusion of all existing and future county, city, town, or municipal ordinances or regulations relating thereto. Any such existing ordinances are hereby declared null and void. This subsection shall not affect zoning ordinances which encompass firearms businesses along with other businesses. Zoning ordinances which are designed for the purpose of restricting or prohibiting the sale, purchase, transfer, or manufacture of firearms or ammunition as a method of regulating firearms or ammunition are in conflict with this subsection and are prohibited.

It appears that I will be carrying the next time in the park.

States are trying to pass new laws strengthening the right to carry in parks. In AZ, you can't if you open carry, but you can if you have your CCW. :banghead:

"I notice a sign that prohibited firearms and I went back to the truck and put my M&P in the center console"

You should have carried the sign along for protection instead.

(kidding, kidding!)

Oddly enough, I seem to have a severe blind spot for signs of that nature. I just don't notice them. I figure the only way someone is going to know that I have a handgun is if I have to use it. If that is the case I will gladly accept the consequences of "not noticing" the sign in the first place.

Write a letter to the genius who posted the sign and any bosses of his who are elected to their job. Explain how your family was almost mauled by a hog because of their unconstitutional rule and mention how you don't appreciate wasting tax money on worthless signs, either.

yes, it makes the sheeple feel good because no guns are allowed.

Every county owned park where I live has a sign stating that weapons are prohibited. When you read the county ordinance however you learn that firearms are exempted from the prohibition, thanks to the efforts of a local gun rights group that successfully challenged them for trying to preempt the state concealed carry law.

The misleading signs are still there. The average person showing up at a park, unless he went online and read the actual wording of the ordinance, is lead to believe he has to leave his gun behind in the car.

At least the hog wasn't carrying.
I just think of those signs as a suggestion, since they carry no legal weight here (except for certain .gov buildings, of course). I doubt anybody's last moments of life involved them thinking "I'm going to die now but at least I didn't break some feelgood law".

The most important thing was that, despite some absolutely idiotic ordinance and the resulting sign, you were able to protect your daughter. Given Florida's preemption of the county ordinance, I would carry anyway.

Even if carrying, though, getting your daughter out of the way, rather than drawing and firing, was CERTAINLY the correct result. I have hunted for years. An instant drop shot is incredibly rare, and would be more so with a 180 lb. charging animal (whose momentum may take him forward into your daughter anyway). Last year, I scored a fantastic lung/heart shot on a large buck. Despite the almost complete obliteration of Mr. Deer's left lung and heart by a Breneke Rottweil slug, he ran over 50 meters after being hit. Quite resilient, and a good example of the power of adrenaline.

If you are in FL the state preemption not only overrides this, but makes the sign illegal to be posted.

I'm "working with" Brevard County on fixing this in my area. So far the two assistant county attorneys and the county attorney have published an "opinion" in reply. It is on the county agenda to be thread, but has not yet been corrected on numerous park signs, nor the parks and recreation website.

Signs, Signs, everywhere a sign, blocking out the scenery, breaking my mind.

What sign? I don't see no stinkin sign.

I reviewed the county ordinance and there is no exemption for licensed conceal carry. It is my understanding that the county attorney is working on language to amend the ordinance and get it before the board of county commissioners. Im not going to hold my breath.
