I need some help I have acquired an old Springfield sxs 20 gauge. I can not find any model number but on the side it is stamped "SPRINGFIELD ARMS COMPANY CHICOPEE FALLS MASS U.S.A" and " PAT. APRIL 20, 1915" serial X699##. the gun is good shape and I need to replace stock which is cracked. any help will most appreciated......

I looked at photos of model 5100 they are similar but with several differences like the pins on the sides are not in same position and on the barrel mine is stamped " proof tested 20 gauge" no shell size like 2 3/4 or 3 inch.
thanks for the reply

You can measure the chamber length to see what length shells it take remember shells are fired length.
Post a photo if you can.

I do believe I have found what model it is .... model 1915 the forearm matches and the pins are in the right places and serial number locations are the same, I will continue looking but I think I have found it , thanks to those that replied.

I seem to remember...

Maybe I am wrong but I think older 20 gauge shotguns have a chamber which is too short to safely fire modern ammo. I think it is short on the order of 1/4" or 3/8", something like that.

This makes a huge difference, I think some have a smith extend the chamber so the crimp petals can open fully and smoothly release the wad and shot column. Otherwise you get pressure issues?

I dont know, maybe oneounce can offer an opinion? Better to have a smith peek at it if your going to shoot it. Personally I have an itchy trigger finger and want to shoot everything so I would have a smith check it.
