The wife was in the living room watching TV and I came in and sat down just as CSI Miami came on. The episode was called "Invasion" and starts out with a brutal, two man, home invasion that takes 57 seconds and results in the husband shot (dead? don't know, didn't watch the whole episode) and the wife and son brutally beaten w/baseball bats.

During that 57 seconds the guy has time to lay on the floor semi-conscious and say "take what you want" after which they grab him and drag him offscreen and then there is a gunshot.

My wife was sitting there with her mouth open looking stunned.

She looked at me and said "is that why you carry in the house?"
I said "well that's the absolute worst case scenario but basically yes".
She shut the TV off and we spent the next half hour having a serious discussion about how to safely answer the door and possible ways to handle a situation like that if (GOD FORBID) it should ever happen.

My wife is a very sensible person and God I love her so!

I'm glad to hear that your wife saw the light. Mine did some time ago and doesn't complain about me carrying in the house. Now if you can get her to carry in the house as well, let me know your secret. I haven't been able to do so . The farthest she has gone is to keep a gun in her car and rarely in her purse.

 Good thing it was make-believe!

You say you didn't watch the whole episode, but I wonder if the guy - or anyone else in the household - was engaged in criminal activity himself. I will wager that a lot of home invasions result from this, e.g., druggies ripping off other druggies. Stay away from that and you vastly reduce your chances of being a victim.

Setup a Google news alert for "Home Invasion" and your opinion of that might change

Although sometimes I get good news like this one.
Robbery Suspect Killed, Another Injured in Home Invasion Shootings

Unfortunately far more sound like this.

Or this

it was an episode of America's Most Wanted last week, where women were being abducted from from the mall,to get my wife to finally say she wants her permit.Sometimes TV can be a GOOD thing.

I always have held the contention that home invasions when someone is home or invasions where the intention is rape are not as prevalent in areas of high home gun ownership.

Personally my wife should think I was absolutely insane if I walked around the house packing. We live in a middle class suburban area where stuff rarely happens. But there have been at least one daylight home invasion and rape within a mile of here this last year. Maybe two I don't remember.

She doesn't think I am nuts for wanting to get a ccw permit for when we are out and about. She is far from a gun nut but even without my evangelism it is apparent to her these random shootings happen and a means of defense is not insane.

This type of home invasion is also being seen more and more often as part of an extortion or kidnapping, at least in parts of the Chinese and Vietnamese community in Canada; they bust in screaming "POLICE! GET DOWN!", and before you know it, they've got you handcuffed and they're ripping off your credit cards and cash, and then they hold you hoastage until your extended family comes up with a sufficient payoff to gain your release.

This I am certain is true. I was very selective when I dated so that she was 100% on board prior to even moving down the road. Sometimes it takes a bit of work for women to get it but once they get it, they get it. Sounds like she had her "moment" of conciousness.

Now if we can just figure out a way to get her packing on the job... That would be a good thing.

Hey, when I think about how far we've come from "gun nervous" but willing to accept my stance....alllll the way to where we are today, it's pretty astounding progress.

Good thing it was make-believe!

I think that scenario was based on a real home invasion in Connecticut see: http://crime.about.com/b/2007/07/24/home-invasion-shocks-connecticut-town.htm
A Brutal Crime Scene

According to The Hartford Courant, these events took place inside the home:

Dr. Petit confronted the burglars and was beaten with a baseball bat and tied up in the basement of the home.

Around 9:20 a.m. Hawke-Petit was taken to the bank and was able to alert a teller about the hostage situation because the suspect who went with her waited outside.

Hawke-Petit withdrew $15,000 from the bank. Police believe that she may have been killed on the first floor of the home as soon as she returned from the bank.

Both daughters were tied to their beds in their upstairs bedrooms. At least one of them was raped.

The burglars poured gasoline in the second floor bedrooms of the two girls and lit the rooms on fire.

The charred body of the oldest daughter Hayley was found at the top of the main stairs.

The youngest daughter Michaela was found tied to her bed. Her body was too badly burned to determine how she died, police said.
Autopsies are being performed by the state medical examiner and authorities expect more charges to be filled.

After the story broke CCWs and gun sales in CT rose sharply

did you see movie: boogyman 2 ? Near the beginning a home invader sneaks up on man changing lightbulb. He guts the man and his intestines fall out.

I think the sucessful key to anti home invasion is not firearms, but security overall. There is no invading if they cant get in.

Hence the discussion about answering the door safely. But even so you can't keep a determined thief/psycho/etc. out forever so having other layers of protection ready AHEAD of time is a good idea too.

I think that women in general have a harder time with weapons in general and CCW in particular because their socializing when young really pushes gentleness, sweetness, delicacy, and unfortunately groupthink moreso than for boys. in our society it is a more masculine thing to defend oneself with a gun.
I applaud all women who show that it is also a FEMININE thing to defend oneself and one's family with a weapon.
