Investigators Identify Teen Shot During Burglary Attempt
Two Anderson Officers On Administrative Leave Following Shooting

POSTED: 10:06 pm EDT April 8, 2004
UPDATED: 10:21 pm EDT April 8, 2004

ANDERSON -- Detectives have identified a teen who was shot to death behind a Clemson Boulevard sporting goods store Wednesday night.

The Anderson County Coroner's Office said that Christopher Nash, 16, died of a single gunshot wound to the chest just after 11 p.m. Wednesday.

Officials said officers responded to a burglar alarm at Grady's Great Outdoors store. When they arrived, they found Nash behind the building. Nash pulled out a gun and two officers opened fire.

Three guns -- one found next to Nash, the others belonging to the officers -- are being examined by the State Law Enforcement Division in Columbia. Officials have not said if Nash fired at the officers, nor how many shots were fired.

The officers, who have not been identified, are on administrative leave while the incident is under investigation.

--- This sporting goods store rocks! Good selection of guns and other outdoors items.

Ya know, there's this comedy show where a comedian tells this long story about getting thrown out of a bar and one line in it is "I don't know how many it would've taken to kick my ass, but I knew how many they were going to use."

Much the same can be said for run-ins with the police and you'd think by now everyone would be well aware of that and not do stupid things like pull a gun. Oh well, a bit more chlorine in the gene pool I suppose...

Parker Dean-stupid is as stupid does. Reminds me of the time a cop buddy of mine was working security behind a restaurant. Sitting in his own truck with another uniformed officer they observed "stupid" going from car to car, surveying the contents and breaking in. Realizing "stupid" was coming up on their truck the officers slid down in their seats, drew their weapons and flashlights and gave "stupid" quite a surprise when he opened the unlocked door. When they went to court the defense attorney, while questioning my friend insinuated they set-up the perp, and went so far as to ask, "officer, do you mean to tell this court that my client would be so stupid as to break in to a vehicle with 2 police officers in it?" The officer replied, "sir, I can't help the fact that your client is stupid." The entire court, including the jury burst out in laughter, and convicted "stupid" in short order.

Don't draw down on John Law! Well, that young fella is not going to draw down on anyone again. Not too bright a fellow. Well I guess that's the way it goes!

Things are getting interesting...

Chief releases names of officers involved in shooting
By Charmaine Smith
Independent-Mail
April 9, 2004

The Anderson Independent-Mail learned Friday that Anderson police officers Dusty Ashley and Susanne Mullis were involved in a shooting late Wednesday that left a 16-year-old boy dead.

As required by departmental policy, both officers have been placed on paid leave until the State Law Enforcement Division completes its investigation.

Initially, Anderson Police Chief Derrill McConnell refused to release the officers’ names. But under the direction of Anderson Mayor Richard Shirley and after consulting with SLED, the police chief released the officers’ names as required by state open records laws.

Chief McConnell said both officers are patrol officers and have worked with the department for at least two years.

However, other details, such as how many shots were fired and whether the boy fired any shots, have not been released. The question of where the handgun, found next to the boy’s body, came from has not been answered.

At 11:17 p.m., Ms. Mullis and Mr. Ashley responded to a silent burglar alarm call at Grady’s Great Outdoors sporting goods store on Clemson Boulevard. According to a police report, the officers found the business’s back door had been pried open and 16-year-old Christopher Brandon Nash behind the business armed with a handgun.

The report states that the "subject pointed his weapon at officers. Shots were fired and the subject was hit."

Mayor Shirley said he would let SLED answer additional questions about the case. He said he believes if any more details are released by himself or Chief McConnell, it might seem as if they are trying to sway the outcome of the state’s investigation.

SLED spokeswoman Kathryn Richardson has not released any details about the case.

Whether or not shots were fired at the officers, Mayor Shirley said the boy’s death is a terrible tragedy. But he defends the actions of the police officers if a gun was aimed at them.

"To me it does not matter one nickel’s worth if a bullet came out of his gun," Mayor Shirley said.Little information about the 16-year-old was available Friday. His family did not want to talk about the incident Friday.

The 16-year-old, who went by Brandon, was one of two children. He had a brother, Michael Nash. Christopher would have celebrated his 17th birthday on May 6.

The McDougald Funeral Home on North Main Street is handling funeral arrangements. The family is receiving friends at the funeral home today from 6 to 8 p.m. His funeral will be held at the funeral home at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.

In my book, there is nothing more stupid than pointing ..... ANYTHING ..... at cops, or even someone else who is armed. It matters not if it is a genuine piece ... a BB, a repro ... even a cell phone.

Anyone I would hope, with an ''savvy'' would drop whatever they may hold .... and present empty hands ...... that surely is logical. No second guessing some folk tho I guess.

The question of where the handgun, found next to the boy’s body, came from has not been answered.

OK, I'll bite.

It came from the hand of the body attatched to the toe tag now in the city morgue.

Haven't these folks heard of Occam's Razor?

Just goes to show that you can never tell when you'll need a pistol. I've shopped at Grady's on many occassion, though their prices are through the roof. And, I just got back from a pistol class in Anderson.

Best of luck to those officers. Hope they come out of this okay.

Hey, Moron, here's a clue for you & your similar-minded buds....

Don't draw down on the Constabulary. It only torques them off, and WILL ruin your day.

It is always a good day when the Good Guys get 1-up on The Sleaze.

I got some information about the shooting last night from friend close to the investigation - and I guess I need to apologize.

Seems the officer that fired the single shot is okay, but the other officer involved was throwing up from the situation - apparently she had a hard time taking it all in. I apologize to both officers about the title of this thread and the cavalier attitude I took.

Also appears this 16-year-old was no angel (duh!), but I'll expand on that once the details are made public.

Could have been worse...

Some days work out better than others...

No charges filed against Anderson officers who shot teen last month

(Anderson-AP) May 4, 2004 - Prosecutors in Anderson say no charges will be filed against two police officers who shot and killed a 16-year-old boy last month while responding to a call about a break-in at a sporting goods store.

Prosecutor Druanne White says she made the decision after reviewing a report by the State Law Enforcement Division.

SLED says Christopher Brandon Nash was killed April 7th after he pointed a gun at Anderson officers Dusty Ashley and Susanne Mullis. A police report says officers responded to a burglar alarm. Officers found pry marks on the business' back door and were confronted by someone with a handgun while scouting the area.

The SLED report says the boy was wearing a ski mask and gloves and put a handgun to his head and threatened to kill himself when officers arrived.

Officers talked with the boy about 15 minutes, trying to convince him to put the gun down. When he pointed the gun at the officers, each fired a shot, striking him in the chest.

The officers were placed on paid leave until the completion of the investigation.
