Andy Griffith

If there ever was a funnier episode of The Andy Griffith show,I can't remember which one it was!
The thought of Barney standing on the outskirts of town, stopping cars headed north and giving away those "kerosene cukes"will always stick in my mind.

Anybody else remember that in the early shows (one bullet notwithstanding) Barney was State Pistol champ?

OK,somebody post that picture of Barney that was on here a while ago for my screensaver...come on one of you computer geeks...uh I mean experts must have it...

I think I'm gonna start DVRing that show, because it certainly provided me a great deal of pleasure when I was a lad. In re-runs, of course.

There's an excellent book called Texas High Sheriffs by Thad Sitton that I highly recommend if you can find it in your library. It's a sort of oral history of several sheriffs in Texas from about the '20s through the '80s, and in it Jim Scarborough III of Kleberg County talks about how his dad, Jim Jr., never carried a gun in something like forty years as county sheriff. He did carry a set of brass knuckles, though, and was state pistol champion, so there y'go.

On the other hand, my local sheriff carries a cocked and locked .45, as do several other members of county law enforcement. So you never can tell.

James,
If you make copies off the current broadcasts, keep in mind they may have been edited for time,so sometimes something is just "missing" from the shows.
The originals ran about 22 minutes or so,but current sitcoms run about 18 minutes, and the old shows are edited down to make more room for commercials.

If you are old enough to remember watching those old black and white shows as first runs, you might recall they only had one commercial break in the middle of a half hour, instead of the two today.

I really noticed it on one Andy Griffith episode, something just jumped and didn't make much sense. That is when it hit me about the heavy editing for time, probably two or three scenes per episode and shorter intros and such.
I had read not too long before that about the time difference, about the time the Freinds cast got one million per episode was probably why brought it up in the article.

Dang it,now I want to go out and buy the sets!

Regards,

yeah depends on the channel yer watching.
most of what i DL of the net is still 22 minutes= first run shows are, but in reruns they arent-

i am such a nerd, when i see seinfeld on TBS for example- i am constantly noticing the lines they cut out to make room for mroe commercials!!!
ARGH!!!

so it depends- some channels sometimes still run the whole 22 minutes, some are down a little- its mroe like 20-21 though, not cut all the way t0 18 very much

without reservation i recommend "A Face in the Crowd" with Andy as Lonesome Rhodes. Over on IMDB one guy says his performance is a mixture of Hitler and Arthur Godfrey.

The biggest sin in the rebroadcast of The Andy Griffith Show (TAGS) is that , in the interest of advertising time, about the last minute ("epilogue") was CUT from the tapes! That was the part of the show that reassured us all that the "problem" in that episode was happily resolved, and life in Mayberry was back to normal, all was well.

That "epilogue" is now lost, in many cases. Some CD/tapes can be had that have found and reincorporated that last minute. Many don't. Unfortunately, there is no full catalog of the seasons of TAGS to be had. I'd buy it in a NY minute.

Also interesting is that in those days the actors of a popular show often taped commercials for the show's sponsors. Andy, Opie and Aunt Bea did several.

I was thinking earlier that I would like to have the entire show, including the old commercials too.
I don't ever remember seeing the epilogues. If I ever did,I have forgotten them, but that was a long time ago and I was still a child in years ( I'm still a child acording to some, haha).
I hardly ever got to watch it as first run, mostly in repeats in the afternoons during the summer and later on TBS and all it's preceding call signs, wtbs, wjrj and a couple others that came in between those two.

Regards,

All them shows back then were way better than the doo-doo they pawn off on us these days. I could sit here for an hour and not be able to list them all.

I know Andy and Barney were amongst my favorites.

I remember one where Ernest T. Bass was wanting to fight with Barney and Barney was all scared. Goober claims to have been a bully in school and asks Andy if he wants him to give Barney some bullying lessons.

Wasn't there also an episode where some Russian Diplomat ends up at Andy's house and they make pals over some of Aunt Bea's pickles at like 2 a.m.?

Remember THAT ONE?

:D

joab: You beat me to posting the pic. Just goes to show you have good taste :)

Mal H: Feel free, and embellish where necessary :D

flatdog.

When I was a kid, I always wanted to live in Mayberry, you ever notice, that the barber shop was always empty.

The only good ones were in black and white. After they went color, Barney left, and for some reason Any became a humorless sour puss.

My favorite episode was the one where those road side produce sellers intimidated Barney, and then Andy went out to the highway to have a talk with them, after which he made Barney go back and deal with it. This time, after Andy had told them that Barney was a psychopathic killer, they showed Barney the proper respect.
