Another "Best Red Dot for an M1 Garand" question

I finally broke down and bought an Amega scout rail that replaces the rear handguard for my M1. It's a bastardized .308 so-called "Tanker" I bought from Arlington Ordinance back in 95 or so. Brownell's has a Burris Fast Fire III with a 3 MOA dot for $250, and Amega has their own tube style red dots for less than half that. Anyone have any experience with their Garand they would like to share before I buy? You can also side mount other items on the rail, and I thinking about one of those newer lasers that really have some range. Basically, it is for home defense and hopefully shooting a few feral hogs. Thanks.

Another? I think this is the first one I can recall actually. I don't think I recall ever seeing a red dot on a Garand either, for that matter.

This thread may be of interest to you, if you are wanting to stay away from Aimpoint and Eotech.

If you may be using it for HD, I'd put a light on it before a laser. But I'd also probably not use an M1 for HD. Maybe an M1 carbine, but not a Garand. YMMV.

Same recommendation I make for anyone who wants to put a red dot on a rifle.

Aimpoint Micro.

Tiny, light, battery lasts forever, the only thing that sucks is the price of admission.

As others have pointed out, the Aimpoint Micro series is hard to beat.
Don't overlook the Aimpoint® Micro H-1, it's less expensive than the T-1

I'm not sure what red dot is on the Garand, but I like it.

I bought a Burris Fast Fire 2 with the protective mount. I think it's a total waste of money and over priced. You can buy the same type of dot sight for half the price. It's hard to adjust and the dot sucks. The best application for these is on a .22 rifle or pistol. I have cheaper dots that work better. Don't waster your money.

Thanks for the $0.02 on the Burris.

I would just assume that a Garand would be far too much of a long-range weapon for a red-dot sight to be effective. Looks like I was wrong again, seems to be a lot of you using them.

And that rifle in post #7 is awesome! Where did all those parts come from? Not that I'd do that to MY M1, but it's a nice option for a barreled receiver with no stock.

Oh, let's not forget the Ultimak M12 handguard.

I wish the "Tanker Garand" had become a real production item instead of a bunch of varying quality gunsmith jobs. I really like the concept, and I would absolutely put an Ultimak or similar rail with an optic on one. No matter how much I like the idea, I just cannot bring myself to put a rail and red dot on my 24" .30-06 rifle. Now, a 18" rifle in .308 (or .30-06 for that matter), is another story.

As for what red dot to use, get a quality one. Cheap red dots are cheap for a reason, and while they might be fine for a .22, a .308 battle rifle needs something it isn't going to break apart with recoil in short order.
