LINK TO STORY: http://www.cnn.com/2011/US/06/14/mexico.guns/index.html

"This report confirms what many of us already know to be true. ... It is still too easy for Mexican drug lords to get their hands on deadly military-grade weapons within our borders," Schumer said. "We need to redouble our efforts to keep violent firearms out of the hands of these traffickers."

The senators are calling for reinstatement of an assault weapons ban that expired in 2004 and better enforcement of a ban on the import of military-style weapons.

Make sure to write your representatives if they get involved on the wrong side of this issue!

dontcha love it how the Govt. can screw up......and then they end up passing laws that apply to everyone except themselves.

Government is the only operating example of a perpetual motion machine which can somehow masquarade as the solution to a problem of its own making, and convince enough suckers of its "success".

I guess that's to be expected in an environment where people fail upwards.

The timing of this story being released is suspect......seeing that the Justice Department is scrambling to cover their rear in lieu of hearings about the ATF & funneling guns to Mexico.

I agree we obviously need to stop selling them RPG's and LMG's (guessing based on the bipod weapons in the background).

How about the US Government stop letting criminals buy guns here and take them to Mexico FIRST ... before we start restricting the rights of law abiding Americans, m'kay?

I think we should stop sales to illegals... oh... they are already not allowed to buy guns... they must be criminals. Same old stuff.... restrict the thing (gun) but do nothing against the criminals. They want to penalize millions of American citizens and gun owners for the sake of a few that sell or traffic weapons to Mexico. That's about the way folks like Shumer think. Maybe this will get the press off Weiner's case.

Give them an education for free, and let them buy guns. The democratic way.

They've been "calling for it" for a long time. There's a handful of senators for whom this is a hobby horse. I don't expect to see substantive legislation put forward.

It's been said:

It's like trying to make a law to make criminals doing criminal things illegal.

The AWB is a great example of gov't inefficiency. Without delving into further detail, the senators restoring the ban are like the candidates whose primary agenda is repealing healthcare, we all go back to square one without helping anyone.

I still want to find the "American Gun Shop" nthat sells the grenade launchers/FA AK's n M16's and all those toys!Trouble is the woolies actually believe this stuff!

Mexican drug lords to get their hands on deadly military-grade weapons within our borders,"

this one sentance is the key. they are talking about MILITARY GRADE weapons. NOT civilian grade weapons! any ban on any civilian weapons will not affect their goals. so any civilian weapon ban is not what needs to be done.. the key is to find out EXACTLY where these guns are coming from, and stop that source! banning a specific type of gun from civilians to stop the flow of military weapons is like changing the tire of an aircraft that needs a new propellor. i do not see how punishing the law abiding citzens is going to stop criminals. DUH!

Totally hypocritical, the ATF is complicit in allowing straw buyers to buy guns in Arizona and take them to Mexico, then they lost track of them......operation gun-runner. Where's the Brady Campaign on their beloved ATF encouraging straw buy's at gun stores? One more thing, Eric Holder should be FIRED!

Smokescreen of convenience and lies.

The same senators have been calling for many types of harsher gun laws, and greater restrictions on what the American public could have for decades.
Strong forces behind the original ban.
Back when very few crimes involved rifles let alone the type targeted and most crime and murders involved handguns, you would be bombarded with propaganda about how the weapons they wanted banned were the instrument of street violence. (If they were the instruments of the violence it still wouldn't have justified banning them, as handguns were actually the instrument of the street killings, but the "assault weapons" as defined then were rarely involved. The powers that be simply feared certain weapons more than handguns, it had nothing to do with reducing crime or murders, but making themselves feel more content with having a centralized consolidated monopoly on effective force.)
While the media would show clips of full auto fire, then talk about "assault weapons" which were all semi-auto.

Long before the current crisis in Mexico they were restricting and reducing Americans' firearm rights.
If the problems in Mexico ended tomorrow they would move onto another justification for the banning of increasing types of firearms.

They will try to ban guns from whatever angle they think might work at the moment.

It isn't going to happen. Feinstein, Schumer, Whitehouse are grandstanding. (Although I didn't realize that Sheldon Whitehouse was part of the "hard core" of antigunners.)

It'd be nice if the politicians would actually do something useful...but thats probably a fool's dream.

Didn't Heller state that people had a right to firearms in common usage? I may of miss read that somewhere so correct me if I'm wrong. But if it is correct, wouldn't that make AWB's void since those types of firearms are in common usage?

Man, I was so upset that my gun shop was out of new RPG's, that, well, I just can't say! The wood cheek piece on mine has some scratches, so I wanted to replace it with a free float kind, and add a tac rail for a light and laser, but all the good stuff had been shipped to Mexico by the ATF guys.:neener:

I hate it when that happens!:fire:

Glad I dont own an AW!:what:

I find the hypocrisy and duplicity of these particular senators to be astounding.

To my knowledge, they have not offered a single criticism of the ATF.

A tip to Schumer and Feinstein: Find a Democrat in the house who wants to work with you, shouldn't be hard, and get them to introduce the bill, the Republicans will let it go to a vote, that way you can find out who your allies are.

The Dems know, especialy Schumer, Feinstein, and Obama that more gun control laws are a political LOSER. This is just talk to appease their base, nothing will be allowed to pass or even go to vote. I am not saying to ignore it. Write, and call your representatives, and reinforce that any gun contol legislation will cause and end to their political careers. They ALL only care about one thing....staying in power.
