Omaha, NE. Alright, Lincoln on Game day Saturdays.
My father passed away February 7. He was 81, and had spent the last week in the Columbus, NE hospital. His body had just worn out. The most compromising factor was the COPD brought on by decades of smoking. Until Saturday night, he still dispensed words of wisdom to his family. He knew I was interviewing for a job on Wednesday, and he told me to dress well!

He graduated Silver Creek, NE HS in 1943, enlisted in the Army Air Corps, and served as waist gunner aboard a B-17 bomber for 31 missions. His missions took him to Germany and occupied Europe. He was a combat veteran. After V-Europe, he furloughed home for a leave, and was then to transition to B-29s and serve in the Pacific theater. He was onboard a train to the west coast when word came of the atom bomb drops. He was ever grateful that he didn't have to serve in that conflict, and became damn angry with those suggesting our country should somehow apologize for the bomb's use.

He was a fine man, a Husker fan, and a wonderful father. Heaven became a better place Tuesday night.

Condolences, and a posthumous "Thank You" to your dad, along with a big sweeping tip of the hat for his service.

My sympathies for the loss of your father. He will live on in your memory. You sound like a wonderful son, full of repesct for your father. That alone will serve you well in the years to come. We all should appreciate his service in time of dire need for this country. I bet he would have kick the hell of the Japs!

Sorry to hear about your father.

My father is 84 and was with the 13th (Jungle) Air Force in the Philippines when the war ended. He feels the same way about the apologists.

Hi Husker,

Sorry for your loss. My father was wounded on Guadalcanal, lived a good life, and passed 5 years ago. A lot of the WW2 guys are in Heaven together. The world is a little worse without them. God bless them.

Kevin

My sympathy for your loss. Indeed , everyones loss when our hero's depart us.

Husker - let me tip my hat too.

My Dad passed May 1997 age 79 - and he was in a Brit tank regiment, he was a commander.

It is sad fact that all our good old folks are moving on, inevitable but no less painful. I salute them all. My condolences.

Honor and treasure the memories - it helps quite a bit.

Husker1911 and others:

Our nation is diminished with the absence of these patriots.
I just read (your) personal profile, and I would conclude that your father is at ease, having passed on the "torch" to you; who strive to keep and maintain those precious freedoms.

When my father passed away it seemed for me as though the world had changed, that it was different in some way altogether, and it was.

Eternal vigilance gentlemen!

God bless you and your family, Husker. My father passed away just last April at 87, just two weeks after my mother. Dad was with the 104th Infantry Division-Timberwolves-who were engaged in fierce combat against the Germans during the last months of WWII. He fought from Holland, across the Inde, Roer, and Rhine rivers, through the Battle of the Bulge and was wounded at Raguhn, about 50 miles from Berlin. He recovered, and was preparing to go to the Pacific when Truman wisely dropped the bomb.

Cherish his memory and know that he is in a better, happier place.

Heaven sure is starting to build the foundation of a great freedom force isn't it?

Sorry for your loss. Thankful for your, and others, Fathers lives as Americans.
