My father passed away February 7. He was 81, and had spent the last week in the Columbus, NE hospital. His body had just worn out. The most compromising factor was the COPD brought on by decades of smoking. Until Saturday night, he still dispensed words of wisdom to his family. He knew I was interviewing for a job on Wednesday, and he told me to dress well!
He graduated Silver Creek, NE HS in 1943, enlisted in the Army Air Corps, and served as waist gunner aboard a B-17 bomber for 31 missions. His missions took him to Germany and occupied Europe. He was a combat veteran. After V-Europe, he furloughed home for a leave, and was then to transition to B-29s and serve in the Pacific theater. He was onboard a train to the west coast when word came of the atom bomb drops. He was ever grateful that he didn't have to serve in that conflict, and became damn angry with those suggesting our country should somehow apologize for the bomb's use.
He was a fine man, a Husker fan, and a wonderful father. Heaven became a better place Tuesday night.
