Nope thats not it....It would seem to only confuse those who don't know what caliber/cartridge their rifle uses.
Springfield Armory manufactured M1 Garand rifles in .308 and currently makes the M1A in .308
Well except for the 50,000 psi comment and commercial ammo being higher pressure.GUS FISHER!! - there's a name from the past! Anything Gus says about the M1, M14 and 1911, in all their variants, you can take to the bank.
Has nothing to do with my opinion....he's confused on his numbers.I'll take Gus's experience as the Marine Shooting Team armorer and years of experience at mil rifle rebuild / modifying / building over your opinion, as you believe is supported elsewhere.
There is no direct conversion.Other than talking about M1 Garands in 308 Win which would be a retrofit.
I'm assuming you are speaking to where they arrived at the 50,000psi max chamber pressure? This would be probably from the Army's maximum allowable pressure of M2 Ball is 50k c.u.p., so they are comparing two different forms of measurements.
Max pressure for 7.62x51mm is ~60k psi
Max pressure for 308 Win is ~62k psi
Converting CUP to PSI formula (which is not necessarily true science, but the below equation is commonly used to convert)
PSI = -17,902 + 1.516 x CUP
So 50,000 cup (m2 ball max allowable) yields
50,000cup x 1.516 = 75,800 - 17,902 = 57,898psi
