image.jpeg image.jpeg Some of you may remember that a couple months ago I was chased home by a Highway Patrolman - a Smith & Wesson Model 28-2 Highway Patrolman with a four-inch barrel, to be exact. (If you don't, here's that thread: https://www.thehighroad.org/index.php?threads/s-w-model-28-2-highway-patrolman.827203/ ).

So I was out Christmas shopping - for one of my kids, really - when what should I spot but another Model 28-2, this one with a six-inch barrel, and, well, you know the rest...

This one is slightly newer - probably 1975 production versus 1971 or so for the other - and sports a trigger shoe. I know these were popular back in the day, I'm just not sure why. And it dwarfs the smaller gun - the four-incher isn't exactly little, but it looks like a snubbie next to the big six!

Congratulations, really a nice fine.I for one missed the first post. Thanks for sharing the link nice model 28-2. I really like the 6" better.

Congratulations. There is just something about a Model 28. I have this memory of seeing one in a G.E.M. store, many years ago and wanting it in the worst way. Alas, again, IIRC, it was $129.00. It might as well have been a million. I had about as much chance of coming up with one as I did the other.

I did eventually get one...well actually three. Two four's and a six. Normally I don't care for a gun that doesn't have a 4" barrel, but I've got to admit that that 6" one was sweet to shoot.

I eventually sold them all three off, along with some 44's, both Special and Magnum's and swore off "N" frames totally. I ain't buying another one of those overstuffed, heavy hunks of steel again.

Famous last words. Like you, I was minding my own business, when a 6" Highway Patrolman (a 1954 "pre-28) jumped out of the case and had it's way with me. It wasn't even pretty, and really showed it's age. The price was more than $129.00, but I had to take it home with me to keep it from spreading tales.

Hope the OP doesn't mind my pictures.

(1954 was the first year production for the Highway Patrolman I've been told.)

Congratulations on finding those fine revolvers. My father-in-law was a trooper back in that era and he also had the trigger shoe on his Colt.

That 6 incher is a hand held carbine.

Enjoy both of them.. S&W made prettier revolvers, but they didn't any better ones that the Model 28s.

I always think of them as the GMC of the GM pickup line.. A little plainer than a Chevy but tougher.

Nice find........you say you were shopping for your kids.....did one of them end up with the new 28-2 Highway Patrolman or was it a "Merry Christmas to me"?

My dad always had a trigger shoe on his. He prefered the wider trigger surface, as do I. Lucky find, two none the less. I'm envious. Enjoy your great revolvers.

My kids aren't old enough to even be trusted with a water gun! But I did find the perfect stuffed pig for my "Pookie" obsessed little girl.

In 1972 I bought a 28-2 new, a 4". It was my first firearm! Like a fool I sold it in 1977. I finally found a 6" in 95% condition. If I find a 4" I will consider it for nostalgia, but I am eminently satisfied with the 6" one.

Great find! Don't know why but always liked the Model 28 with a 6" barrel. With the N frame .357s my Grail Gun would be a Model 27 with a 5" barrel.

I have a 28-2 that I got when my dad passed away. he bought it new and never shot it. I have had it for 14 years and never shot it. Some day.

That's a tough call to make on whether to shoot it or not.

To be honest I am waiting for one or the other of my sons to go shooting with me and he will have the honor of firing the first shot from granpa's gun. I have been waiting a long time. When I get a new gun and go to my buds ranch I normally let him be the first to fire my new gun. But in this case i may just have to do it myself. Darn it!
