Another LEO ND!!!

Not really sure what to say to that. I can't imagine EVER hanging a loaded gun by the trigger guard. Baffles the mind.
That seems like a real dumb idea.

Every one does dumb now and then, but this violates rule 1, unless the ceiling is bullet proof.

I bet this is not an unusual thing for people carrying a handgun to do though. Every alternative to the problem of what to do with a handgun while taking a dump leaves a lot to be desired.

I would be willing to bet that far, far more negligent discharges occur (by percentage of those carrying) among the non-law enforcement gun-owning/gun-carrying community than among the law enforcement community. Not that it matters one whit to some of you, but you can't understand that it's a numbers thing. 100% of cops carry daily in the course of their work day. What percentage of gun-owning citizens carry daily to work every day?

Difference is, it's a news story if it happens to a cop.

Cops, many of them, carry a firearm most of their waking day. Many cops carry for far more hours per day, every day, for many years longer than the average citizen. Yep, and to most, it's just a tool and complacency can set in after many years. People get stupid. All of you tellin' me you've never in your life had a "restroom emergency," ran to find a men's room and fumbled around trying to get on the pot real fast? Stuff happens.

How many of you who've posted have carried a handgun with you out in public every single day for the last 25 years?

The fangs come out every time one of these stories pops up ... and some of the venom that's spouted is not only uncalled for, it can and will affect our movement, once the antis see us continuing to turn on each other and expound on how even law enforcement isn't safe with their own weapons.

The original poster indicates that he is located on the "left coast". Sounds like he can't get a ccw because, as we all know, mere citizens are too stupid to be trusted with carrying guns. Police officers are different. They've had TRAINING.

Until two years ago, I lived in NJ, which is a left coast wannabe. We had to jump through all kinds of hoops (fingerprints are between 10 am and 12 noon on thursdays) just to get a permit to buy rifles. And then wait. We were constantly being told that we weren't good enough. etc.

In one town in which I lived, a LEO negligently launched a bullet down the center aisle of a room full of explorer scouts. It never made the papers because it was covered up. I found out about it from one of the scouts.

So, excuuuuuuuuse us if we react a little excessively when a LEO screws up.

Some people just really never do get it. This is nothing against LEO's; several years ago a patrolman shot himself in the dispatch garage of our city. Truned out he and another were playing russian rouelette. The did it once every day. Lady luck finally turned against one and cost him his life.
The lesson for me was never to become too casual with firearms.

"100% of cops carry daily in the course of their work day. What percentage of gun-owning citizens carry daily to work every day?"

Actually it's not 100%, though it's pretty close. But many of them haven't removed their guns from their holsters in years.

And the number of legally armed citizens STILL outnumber the number of police officers nationwide.

But what I think the point that is being made is that there is a different set of rules for police than for the law abiding citizen. You might expect to have a higher standard for the police because they are supposed to be "trained" but in fact, if a citizen had discharged a firearm in a room full of fourth graders, or in a bathroom of a public building, they'd likely be charged with reckless conduct or worse. But LE are exempt, just like they are exempt from a lot of other carry laws that the rest of the responsible population must live by.

"I sure glad most of you guys are so perfect or don't live in glass houses!"

Let's face it. This one is pretty darn bone headed.

When the hell did STUPIDITY become an accident, other than when this guys parents met.....

High Road?

I have read many post on here of AD's (it is a negligent if you INTENDED to fire a round) and none of those guy's got in trouble with the police nor did they have all of us ragging on them.

Not so High Road around here......

Not so High Road around here when it comes to an accidental discharge. It really does not matter who did it or where it happened and I offer the same comments I have offered before on this subject
AND ONCE AGAIN NO ONE HERE ON THE HIGH ROAD HAS EVER MADE A MISTAKE ! and this one tooyes because he had an accident with a gun lets toss him into the volcano as a human sacrifice to the anti gun gods in hopes that they won't come get our guns!.

I have only seen two threads on THR where folks did not toss the shooter to the lions over an accidental discharge. In all honesty seems to me threads go positive or negative based upon the first 3 to 5 posts in responce. If they are negative the MOB responds in a hateful mannor if those first few posts are positive then the thread will flow in a good manner.

on yeah and this last thought it was an accidental discharge of a neglegent nature.

Oh no, it most certainly IS NOT. If you hang your handgun by a hook inside the trigger guard that is NEGLIGENCE.

Negligence:
failure to exercise the care that a reasonably prudent person would exercise in like circumstances

This is one of the most extreme cases of NEGLIGENCE I've ever read about here on THR. Hanging a handgun up by a hook inside the trigger guard? That has got to be the most purely stupid thing I have ever heard. The fact that the guy is an LEO matters not.

Since some of you like the pretty colors......
THIS CANNOT, BY DEFINITION, BE AN ACCIDENT

Accident: an unexpected happening causing loss or injury which is not due to any fault or misconduct on the part of the person

Stupid: marked by or resulting from unreasoned thinking or acting

There was fault here, there was negligence here, and there was most certainly stupidity here.

You know who I would like to toss to the lions? People who abuse formattiing in damn near every single post. It's a 4 year old who thinks it is cute to write every other letter in a different color of crayon.

Yeah, I'm looking at you, Erik F.

oh
like
this:D
I had no idea you where a fan of mine;) OH and its Eric with a c not a k

(flame retardant suit on)

No, no, NO! The hook is where you're supposed to hang your DONUT. What we have here is clearly an officer who forgot which hand the donut was in. Betcha they found the donut in his holster.... :neener:

(/flame retardant suit off)

If I were in the squad room, that's only one of the jokes that would be going around about this poor guy. ;)

Glad no one was hurt. It's a tough way to get reminded about awareness and safety.

You think the hanging the gun on the hook is stupid? Long ago I read an account of a LEO hanging the gun in said manner, a 1911 pattern, and when trying to retrieve it, firing like 3-4 rounds from the hook!

LETS DROP THE LEO JOKES,EVERYONE IS HUMAN,AND MAKES MISTAKES,BUT
AT THE END OF THE DAY IF YOU WERE FACED WITH A SITUATION WHERE YOU NEEDED HELP,AND THIS GUY WAS THE FIRST RESPONDER YOU WOULD BE HAPPY.We need to understand that leo are human also, and make errors also,we should not put anyone on a high horse except Jesus Christ. The press
does enough bad for all of us about Leo lets just pray for them.

Phil, I agree but we are all human and if anyone on THR says they haven't made a firearm mistake they're lying. I have and I'm not ashamed to admit it and hope others can learn from it.

What frosts my rear is that most of the knuckleheads on here that are knocking or making fun of LEO are the ones that will be yelling for one at the slightest provocation. Then they stand behind their fake handles and make themselves out to be such big brave heroes who never make mistakes. It's sickening. They should try living under the work conditions and stress a LEO does sometime.

Thanks czbegenner. You are much more polite and forgiving than I am!

Ok, Im new here. Note the post count :)

But I am going to weigh in on the conversation as I have perceived it while reading this thread.

1) LEO's are people too and are subject to AD/ND just like everyone else. (I agree completely)

2) However, LEO's dont seem to have the same rules applied to them as do Civilians. (i.e. 8 day suspension vs. fines or jail time) ( I also agree, not sure what we can do about it.)

3) Futher, This may have only made the news because it was an LEO. (I dont know, IF I set off a handgun in Dallas County Courthouse, Im pretty sure I would find out if the TV really adds ten lbs or not :)

Personally, when I coneal its IWB. There is NO easy way to use the facilities while carrying. So yeah, I can understand what happened.

Now heres my point. I dont get to carry to work everyday. I have to leave it in my truck or at home. I only get to carry when Im out and about. LEO's carry all day everday, even when off duty.

Statistically speaking (using my number of hours carrying vs. an LEO) I wonder who would have a higher ratio of hours carrying to AD/ND? Me or an LEO? Its just a thought.

There are idiots in all walks of life and considering just how many people handle guns everyday the odds are someone's going to have an ND. Hanging a loaded weapon on a hook inside the trigger guard seems pretty careless though. I think it's only fair that he be treated EXACTLY the same as any other person with respect to the law. Being a LEO, he should really be held to a higher standard but I'll settle for the same treatment as any civilian in the same circumstances.:scrutiny:

I agree that anyone who would commit such a stupid act should be held accountable and that an 8 day suspension probably wasn't adequate, and yes they should be held to a higher standard, but raking ALL over the coals and draw-and-quartering them isn't appropriate either!

Your welcome Grizzy, we need to stop and think about what we are saying, because there might come a day when you realy need a leo and then what???
