Stopped by "my" shop the other day to see if they had anything interesting. While I was looking at the rack a customer turned to me with a revolver in his hand and asked what I thought of it. It was an old Colt Official Police 38.

I checked it and said it looked to be in good shape, locked up tight, and I didn't see anything obviously wrong with it. He then said "Check the backstrap."

On the backstrap was stamped "TREASURY DEPARTMENT SECRET SERVICE." Fellow behind the counter pulled out his Colt book and checked the S/N and said it was from 1939.

I handed it back to the other fellow and told him it I'd buy if he didn't. He said "Well, I don't want it. I just thought it was neat." I said, "You're sure?" He replied, "Sure."

Out came the papers. :D

I don't go out of my way to look for Colts, but they're hard to pass up.

Looks like its been held a lot and shot a little. Thats both a nice gun and an interesting piece of history. Congratulations. :)

I love agency marked guns. I have a federal S&W but it was not stamped.

That gun looks like it rode in a holster for years without coming out. No wear from sliding in and out but all the finish is gone from the agent resting his hand on it. Cool gun.

Very nice. I like everything about it and the stamping even more. Congratulations on a great get.

Indeed!! Bench grinder is being warmed up...

Now where did I put my hammer?

Who says Colts are delicate!

Let's see: a classic Colt revolver, in great condition, with some very interesting history to it; sounds like you hit the Trifecta with that one! Well done and a fantastic addition to any collection.

Love the markings like that. I'm not sure how many get stamped by their department, but in my eyes it adds tremendously to the allure of a used gun to know where it was used in it's "previous life".

I have one of these too, made in 1947. Found it in a pawn shop. It has some holster wear and shoots like a dream. Mine was supposedly someone's duty gun a long time ago. It has the plastic "Coltwood" grips. Yours looks like it might have actual wood. 100_7295.gif

As much as I drool over LEO marked guns, you'd think I'd have 9 or 10.
But I honestly don't have any.
One of these days one will find the way to my house. :D

Very nice gun & really good photography too.
