Another Ruger SFAR

Ive loaded a good bit of 308 in the past for my M1A's and M1 match rifle, and a Remington 700V in 308.

For practice and match ammo, 4895 and 4064 always worked well with 147/150 and 168 grain FMJ and SMK bullets.

I always got the best accuracy out of 4064 with either 168 grain SMK's or 165 grain Nosler BT's.

Other than the Remington, which I took a little more pains and care with loading for, I just loaded everything else to spec and so they would work in any of the autos I was shooting them in without issue. Never had a problem there either. Those same loads seem to work fine in my AR10 as well.

I also like 4064 but I have other rifle calibers I load for and 4895 works across the board in all of them. It made more sense to keep one powder around rather a bunch.

Some people clearly have much more money than I do for fancy handles and I'm truly glad for them. I can't fathom spending 10% of the total rifle cost on a charging handle.

I found that pretty funny since I've been staring at various SFARs both online and in person and I never caught the different placement. I totally get why it's different though.

I did see the manual recommends the "3" setting for initial break-in. It further says that "2" setting should be sufficient for most commercial ammo, but that you should use the highest number setting that allows the gun to function. I played with the gas block already and I was astounded how easy it was to change settings. I actually thought it was broken at first. It comes with an Allen key and you just rotate it 1/4 turn. There's almost no resistance and there's a positive detent to make sure it's in the proper spot. In case that's not clear enough, there is a number that shows on the right side of the gas block. That's your current setting. It even has a no gas setting ("0").
FWIW... some ammo hasn't played well with the SFAR. Igman and PPU tend to softer brass, and that has been an issue while extracting the fired case. I would look over all your fired brass if you start with the #3 gas setting.
And make sure you clean then relube it prior firing it.

There are pics over at the https://www.rugerforum.net/search/273567/?q=SFAR&o=relevance

And not trying to be downer guy, but more of a watch for any of these issues guy.

And... this recoil pad is FAR softer than the OEM one from Magpul... https://grabagun.com/lms-mgpl-moe-sl-recoil-pad.html

I have many of them, some are about ( ? ) 10years old... and just as good as brand new.

I haven’t tried those brands of ammo. I know that Norma and PMC are just fine in mine. Swiss Saltech is not.

Thank you for the recoil pad info. I am getting one of those.

I was going to go with a Bravo Company wide handle but I didn’t want to spend a bunch of money only to find I didn’t like it. So, I bought a Strike Industries model with the extension only one one side and I got it on sale. I like it.

The package it came in:

How it extends only on one side:

So far I like it.
I also bought this charging handle. I like it a lot, way better than the stock one with a scope. I've not fired all that many rounds through mine yet but so far so good.

It does make a difference. The only thing I didn’t think about with it is shoulder carry with the rifle against my back. One side has the forward assist to poke you and now the “flat side” has a pokey charging handle. 😆
I am sure I will get over it. ;)

I am still sorting out my commercial ammo choices. Due to work, life, and the crazy hot summer, I've not spent the proper time at the bench to figure it out completely. Add to that I'm not a great benchrest shooter and am kinda inconsistent. I'll add pics when I edit this from my phone, but I've tried different stuff and haven't really narrowed it down. One that is very promising is the PPU 168 gr Match. Price is good and I have no issues with performance.

If that's a decent price for factory .308 I have to say I'm getting a bit of ammo anxiety. At some point I will run out of large rifle primers and it doesn't look like there is much of a supply to be had.

There are cheaper options at SGAMMO.COM but this stuff is pretty dang accurate compared to the other stuff at it's price point...at least based on my limited experience...

You could also scour AmmoSeek. I hear good things about Igman ammo. I am not familiar with a lot of the lower priced ammo on AmmoSeek in regards to .308.

I finally got out to a friend's house to test out the SFAR pictured at the start of the thread. Before going out I put a Limbsaver pad on the gun. We measured out exactly 100 yards and dialed the gun in. Initially it was way off but that was easily rectified. The main problems we had were the cold and the wind. Well also my atrocious shooting! I left my phone in the car so I wasn't able to get pics but I managed about a 3" group, which I consider decent considering I brought a hodgepodge of different ammo. The gun jammed once or twice but I'm not too worried with only 50 rounds or so down the barrel. My friend had limited time and wanted help with his AR-15, so I made that the priority and was rewarded with a giant grin and a handshake from him.
